I have two computers. I do understand the reason for low folding on one may not be the other. I'm converting my mining rig to a folding rid. To do so I needed a new notherboard. With that came new CPUs, a case, RAM, etc. For those that don't know about mining, it's kinda barebones... except the GPUs.

My system is now:

• OS: Xubuntu 12.04
• Storage:
  • Marvell RAID 0 (4x Muskin 120GB Chronos SSDs)
  • WD Blue 250GB 5400 rpm SATA II (swap/scratch)
• CPU: 2 x Xeon E5-2603v2
• RAM: 8 x G. Skill DDR3-1066 4GB
• Motherboard: ASUS Z9PE WS
• PSU: 2 x Lepa G1200W
• Driver: Catalyst 14.9
• GFX: HSI 7950 IceQ Boost

I have 4 more 7950s (same model) and 2 7970s IceQ Boosts. But I wanted to get this up and running before I added them in.

Problems: Low PPD. I have a Kill-A-Watt (well two... one per PSU, but only have one active now). I reads 118W on idle. It reads 139W on medium.

aticonfig --odgc

indicates 0% GPU usage. It's ticking along very slowly. Deadline ~3 days... expected finish ~10. No problem with CPU. Says CPU:6 I'm assuming that's 7 cores. My CPUs do not have hyperthreading. I have 8 cores total. I've used -1 in the GPU settings.... no change.

I've used these mining, same OS no problem. Furmark and other GPU benchmarks on Linux... no problem. What can I do?

On my laptop I have an AMD A10 APU and a R290X. CPU does fine. R290X does fine. Integrated GPU... 8850 I think... same thing as my 7950. Finish far past deadline. This one is Win8 though.

Welcome to the forum, nrobidoux.

It reads how many watts on full? If you want to get the best PPD, the Power slider needs to be at full. That is the first step.

IIRC, folding performance went up after Cat 14.13. Upgrade the driver to latest for your OS.

But in the end, you might still have better luck with Windows for GPU folding. Try the above first.

Hard to tell based on the log you provided. You need to wait a number to frames to give the PPD prediction enough data points. Based on you log there is just the first frame in process on core 17. And at that point in time the CPU is more busy in preparation and transfer data to the GPU.

On my GTX 780 one frame from project 13000 take more the. 7 min; waiting for let say 5 frames gives you at least half an hour to get a stable prediction.

Assuming that there is some time between your first post and now: how is the PPD right now ?

Of course there could be a driver issue, but others would need to jump in as I dont know AMD setups (I'm from the "green" side)

Another thing: did you recently started the the passkey/donor name combination ? Because you need 10 finished/transferred/accepted WU before the quick return bonus generate higher PPD; if you are below that initial 10 WU limit (or below continued 80% rate) Points will be only the lower base points.

When did you started folding ? When I look on your donor ID I see 1000 finished WU with 900000 points. A bit unusual for today's setups
Reason 1: started many years ago with much lower points
Reason 2: started with NaCL client
Reason 3: something wrong with your passkey (typo ?)

General reply to each is, I know my subject line says PPD. But PPD is related to speed of work being completed. I got no speed because my GPU is not working hard. My Kill-A-Watt should be over 350W. From my understanding reading a few posts and your replies... if I just started and was cruising along with 350+W on my meter I would be getting low PPD anyway. I believe I'm getting it because my GPU isn't doing anything.

Funny you say this. I've read some posts that say go to previous drivers... I just tried Catalyst 12.4. Slider to full... Gives me cpu:7 instead of cpu:6. (Both 14.9 and 12.4) I don't have my laptop with me to compare (~2000 miles from here folding away) but my gpu line in FAHControl says gpu:0: Tahiti Pro [Radeon HD 7950] I believed on medium and full GPU is at 100% usage. Light, GPU is disabled. Medium/Full doesn't change GPU speed for me. I haven't timed it but saying >5 minutes per 0.01% ... I would be comfortable with that statement.

Not enough for the ETA to change. Keep changing things and it keeps restarting from 0.00%

I started many years ago and got to 3xxK. I really can't remember the exact number but it was below 400k. Then several year break. I can't remember when I started again.... I think 2 months ago? That was with my R290X laptop. The APU has always been too slow. The R290X and CPU have been good.

I literally just got my server / workstation up and running and am trying to get that going. I've done a few with the NaCL client. But most have been with the desktop client.

My passkey I got... September 20th. I copy paste it. My laptop has basically been running 24/7 when it can. 95++% of my points from 3xxK -> 900K is my laptop. I probably have finished the 10 WUs required.

Someone mentioned going "green"... it'd be a tough move. Lots of time, effort and cost getting my mining rig up. More to convert this to folding... Purchase 7 NV GPUs... hard on the wallet.

Waited two cycles just to make sure I counted for the 0.01% correctly from 1.64% - 1.66%

The posts about older AMD drivers working better were likely for folding older work units, and not for Linux.

CV wasn't suggesting you change to the green team, just that he was green and didn't have personal experience on the red team. Please post more of your log when you get a chance.

We're going to head down the spiral of over niceness but I'm stopping it here. I read some things too fast. I think I might have added that on my own... just because I know it would work, lol. Okay, I guess I didn't stop it.

Going to try the beta drivers. 14.9 is coming up as the most recent for me.

I guess versions above 14.9 are for Windows only. :/ I've commented out the "fold-anon" and "gpu" tags in my original xml file. Their original values were 'true' and 'false' respectively. I read that since values are defined further down with other tags, those values were overwritten anyway. I'll try whatever. Tried installing the 'fglrx' and 'fglrx-amdcccle' packages from the repository. No change.

I then removed (hopefully) all acpi packages and sane (as I was getting some crashes on boot). Fixed that. Sane caused the crashing. Tired of my computer sleeping so no acpi. Removed the fglrx packages I installed above. Turns out they seem to be Catalyst 12.4. Was going to reinstall 14.9. Instead of "installing" the fglrx drivers I "generated" the package when the choice was presented in the dialog box. (Ubuntu/precise option)

.... I have not seen much of a change. The only thing that it is apparent is that the GPU line changed slightly. It now reads:

... is that normal for project 13000 on a 7950 / R9 280? Have I been chasing a ghost? My watt meter reads 148W. Instead of 0% usage from "aticonfig --odgc" it says 4%.... progress.

To remove the driver when I was changing them around to test versions I used:

sudo /usr/share/ati/fglrx-uninstall.sh

Is that correct? .... maybe because I used dpkg to install and generated the packages I'm not seeing it anymore and have to use apt-get for the uninstall. 3 packages were generated: fglrx, fglrx-amdcccle, fglrx-dev. Saw the shell script anytime I used the *.run file for install and chose to 'install' instead of 'generate.'

I came across something in my searches....

• Folding on AMD GPUs is problematic in linux due to poor OpenCL driver suppport from AMD. Linux GPU folding is still in beta testing.

I switched to Windows 7 Home for testing. Not exactly apples to apples as it only supports 1 CPU but wattage is reading 249W (+~80W TDP for 2nd CPU if it could work would be about where I thought), CCC is indicating 100% GPU usage, ~2.2 seconds / 0.01%... I'll be buying 7 Pro to dual boot..... maybe to replace Win8 on my laptops!

On a P13001, I am getting an ETA of 20 1/2 hours and 68k PPD (12:16 TPF) on a HD 7870 with the 14.4 drivers (Win7 64-bit). It draws around 105 watts from the wall; with a 90% efficient power supply that is around 95 watts net power to the card.
