GPU assignment failure? {Old GPUs not supported]

Post by compdewd »

Hello everyone, I seem to be having a problem downloading GPU work units. I don't know if this is a Stanford problem or a problem on my end, but for now I assume it's my fault. I recently searched the GPU whitelist for GeForce 6100, which is one of my computer's integrated graphics, and downloaded the GPUs.txt. (Yes, I'm sure this isn't a very good GPU to fold on, but I want to give everything I can!) Anyway at first I tried it with the GPU index at "-1" and the client told me basically that there were no detected applicable GPUs (I forget exactly what it said). Then I tried again with the index at "0" and it accepted the slot. The only problem now is that apparently there are no GPU work units to give out? Hopefully that's not true and it's just me ;) Here's the log if it helps:

Re: GPU assignment failure?

Post by compdewd »

This is also occurring on my GeForce 8400GS card in a separate computer. I also had to manually set the index to "0". I've never had experience with GPU folding before so hopefully someone can point out what I'm doing wrong or if this is happening to anyone else. Thanks a ton for your help!

PS. Sorry if this is a misplaced topic. I wasn't sure where it would be best placed.

Re: GPU assignment failure?

Despite it being on the whitelist, the 6100 is not actually supported. The earliest supported Nvidia cards are from the 8000 series.

I'm not sure if the Pande Group ever specifically said that the whitelist was just for folding-capable cards; considering the vast quantity of non-folding-capable cards on it (all the way back to the ATI Rage XL and Nvidia Riva TNT), I'm guessing they just want a list of all known GPUs and their Device IDs, with the servers figuring out whether or not they're capable of processing work.

As for the 8400, I'm less sure of what the problem there is. I believe some of the 8400s aren't supported, but I'm not 100% on that and I don't know if that applies to your card. If you could post the System portion of the log from that computer it might help.

Actually, it's not on the whitelist. It is on GPUs.txt but it's specifically blacklisted. That's why it says UNSUPPORTED: C51G [GeForce 6100]. The 6100 cannot be used for folding. It's just too weak.

Yep, GPUs.txt is both Whitelist and Blacklist.

Black listed...
0x107d:0x2a68:::G71 [GeForce 7950 GT]

White listed...
0x107d:0x2ab0:2:1:G92 [GeForce 8800 GT]

See the difference in the format?

Can I fold with NVidia GeForce 6800 GT? Running on Windows 2000 Pro.
If not, would it work (just in general) on WinXP?

Windows can use a lot of GPUs which are too weak for either FAH or for serious video games

No to Windows 2k. Yes to XP or newer.

IIRC, 8800 or newer. I'm not sure if the 6800 is newer or not. To be sure, check the list of supported GPUs linked in the requirements section of the install guide.

That is strange if it is true that some 8400s don't work, but if it helps, the card was manufactured by Zotac.

7im, unfortunately that format difference seems pretty subtle for determining between two very different things imo

The "unsupported" message in the log helps to make that distinction.

Yes, my bad 7im, I thought the 8400 was supported. I didn't see your post before I posted last time.

Thank you all!

Not bad, no. I agree with you. The format difference is too small. I've made a recommendation to improve it, but we'll see what happens...

Hi guys,

I have been contributing to the project and i'm using fah v7 on mac os x 10.8. I have a macbook pro with a dedicated graphic card nvidia geforce 9600m GT.
THe client is not able to download work for the gpu. i have the same error reported in there. I have already downloaded GPUs.txt and my card is whitelisted.

Information on GPUs.txt : 0x10de:0x0647:2:1:G96 [GeForce 9600M GT]

Can you help me?

Welcome to the folding support forum meligaletiko!

Sorry to report that at this time there is no core for running the GPU on the mac os. The current v7 client does allow for the option but without a core there are no work units. The option may be hidden or better controlled during installation in future releases, at least until it is supported. Currently, when that will happen(if ever) is unknown.
