Hello,

My "new" folding PC just had an issue. It just dumped 3 WUs across both CPU and GPU instances. Luckily I was arround at the moment and my reflex was to pause everything and reboot the PC (running Windows 11). Before rebooting I cut and pasted the log file from the browser in order to save it (a long process).

From what I can see in the log :
- The CPU instance (WU96, p18806-r38-c1-g495, 0xa9) stalled at 17%, dumped and reloaded a new WU (WU98, p18496-r1-c7-g32, 0xa8). It's still running OK.
- 37 minutes later, the GPU instance (WU97, p16781-r25-c3-g270, 0x23) failled at 28%.
- It loaded a new WU (WU99, p18224-r16-c8-g89, 0x23), it failled immediately with very few entries in the log.
- It loaded another WU (WU100, p18230-r206-c7-g65, 0x24), before it could fail, I paused every thing. After rebooting, I restarted the folding manualy (I dont know how the restart folding automaticaly on reboot). It has been folding without problems for about an hour without problema
- These three failled WUs might be 2 (or 3) unrelated issues or not. Or the PC might be showing unstability. I posted this because the message "Make a post about your issue on https://foldingforum.org/ to get more help" appeared in the log.

It would be very usefull to know where the log file is, Google has not been much help so far.

Thanks for listening to my story.

It would be very usefull to know where the log file is, Google has not been much help so far.
Well, according to this shortcut with the creative title "logs-Shortcut" on my W10 desktop here,

C:\ProgramData\FAHClient\logs, with the most recent one in C:\ProgramData\FAHClient .

Logs or no logs, if everything is failing around the same period of time, your PC is the culprit. If one thing fails, then it can be attributed to something broken on FAH side, but when you have several different devices fail at the same time, then it is the system's fault, most likely.

It is imperative to make sure that any PCs you have are 101% stable before folding. Game stable or internet browsing stable is not FAH stable.

Yes I did, I responded,

Did you read my message ?
I followed the instructions in the log to post here !
I did not expect the (unsatisfactory) responses I got.

If the support forums will help me (like it did in the past), I will gladly enthusiasticaly accept the help.
If folding does not work, I will stop folding.

If my new PC (5 july) is unstable, what do I tell the store (BestBuy) where I buy it ? It is a HP brand direct out of the box.
Ten years ago, I built and overlocked PCs and GPUs for folding. I know what an unstable is. This time, NO.

I get the feeling of being treated like a child.

All is not unstability. I get WUs all the time that have failled elsewhre (once two times).

I will stop now my rant.

Have a nice day.

Thank you appepi. I found it now.

If your GPU and CPU fail at the same time, that is not FAH's fault. Basically CPU and GPU fahcores are different pieces of software. Child or not child, look at your own corner first. Tell bestbuy to learn how to build PCs, they are far from "best"

This kind of answer IS OF NO HELP at all.
I will repeat: make sure your GPU, RAM, and CPU are 100% stable.
Your logs are showing typical errors when system is unstable

Hope this helps

This kind of answer IS OF NO HELP at all.
The issues you are seeing appear to be related to stability. This isn't something we're able to help with. The computer is probably faulty, but you only found out when trying FAH. A faulty (unstable) computer might be able to browse the web or play games fine, but might not be able to run FAH.

For now, stop GPU folding and try CPU folding only. If you can turn off turbo boost, that might make the system more stable. Try that and see if it helps.

A possible test regime:

If it is a new PC and (apparently) only "unstable" on FaH WUs, then presumably you can make a claim on the supplier, warranty etc. The snag is that FaH is an unusual thing to do. I am assuming that you are running a CPU with only 1 type of core and letting the Fah 8.4.9 app set up the clients, in which case it is probably assigning 1 core to deal with the GPU's needs and grabbing every other core to run 100% as the CPU client. Clearly this would be a stress test for all the hardware, which might operate without problems in ordinary use. If I have doubts about my own elderly HP hardware, I do a number of things to check them out, and many of them have run for years without any "instability" causing problems. It would be helpful if you can post the CPU type and GPU, however. New is not always good. Also, it would be a good idea to test CPU jobs alone for a while; and if CPU jobs don't fail, then add the GPU without any major concurrent CPU work other than GPU support.

1. Geekbench 6. This is free to use unless you want to have an account and save results, and then it is only a few dollars and supports Ontarian industry. There is an irrelevant debate about how good/fair etc it is, but that's not the point, so long as it makes the device jump through relevant hoops. When I am thinking of buying devices I always look at the CPU benchmarks, and when I buy them I run the same tests to check them out. This is certainly a good guide to relative performance on Statistical software like STATA. My account goes back to Geekbench 3 so I also have a history over time for the same device and can see if it is continuing to perform as usual. GB will run all logical CPUs at 100% in the multicore tests, though you would need to do repeated runs for hours on end to emulate the stress of FaH CPU jobs. Earlier versions of Geekbench had separate CUDA compute tasks but now it seems only to offer openCL and Vulkan for my GPUs which always use CUDA for FaH. But that is just the API and we are concerned here with checking out the hardware.
2. Cinebench is a good stress test for a CPU when run at 100% utilisation for hours and widely used, so if you had Cinebench data showing problems your supplier should accept the evidence.
3. Unigine Superposition (also free or a small price for an account) will test your GPU for normal video-type use, and you can look up benchmarks. Be aware that the more extraordinary results on leaderboards may involve liquid nitrogen cooling and other exotic stuff. Again this is relatively short-term stress, so passing may not indicate much, though failing definitely would.
4. If you run HWInfo (also free for personal use ) with data logging switched on during a Fah job you might get documentation of what was happening when an error occurred.
5. It would be good to run something like ASUS Geekbench 3 or other GPU management utilities so you can see what sort of stress is being applied to the GPU, and if need be limit it. I keep my GPUs temperature limited to 70 deg C with aggressive fan profiles since fans are a lot cheaper than GPUs.

I only fold with GPUs in HP workstations these days so some of the HP workstation utilities I used to use to control CPU core usage and temperatures are probably not relevant, except to note that both Fah 7.6.21 and 8.4.9 don't fuss if you limit their access to cores by means other than the 8.4.9 slider. In my experience memory rarely fails but sometimes needs reminding that it is plugged in by re-seating it. It would also be a good idea to separately test CPU jobs, because GPU jobs are always GPU+(some) CPU and problems with CPU would affect both.

Lastly, it would be helpful if the FaH enterprise could set up a small set of CPU and GPU WU's with current production cores, across a range of "Stress" demand, that folk could use as testware in situations like this.

At the moment FAH is not in the business of providing test software. Maybe in far future, maybe.

For a moment, any stress testing software which makes use of AVX2+ instruction set is good enough for CPU stress testing. I use y-cruncher, and set it to stress testing: launch y-cruncher, type 2, press enter, then 0 and enter. Close all the apps to clear out as much RAM as possible before start stress testing. Leave stress test running for few hours or until error/system instability occurs. y-cruncher loads RAM as well as CPU. Problem with that though is that it will not load RAM reserved/used by Windows.
For GPUs, well unigine or any other benchmarking suite could show potential issues.
I'm still leaning towards RAM instability in above case

Benchmarks are not stability testing tools ... try StressCPU v2, Furmark or OCCT.

You should also check memory for error, these can be surprising.

on my computer with AMD ryzen 9000 and last gen mobo x670 i found out that if i would enable AMD EXPO in BIOS, eg. boosting RAM that is supposed to run at 6400 MHZ to that frequency, otherwise it would run at 4800 Mhz only<
that this option in BIOS would nearly every time causeing AMDGPU to fail to build correctly, resulting in sorts of error. never found out what would cause it, until after disabling this and then AMDGPU would magically build without error.
The computer would otherwise not show any error or signs of instability, but apparently even without showing signs of instability, the AMD EXPO caused it, although the memory supposed to be certified to run at 6400 Mhz. Maybe this also because it is a combination of Ryzen 9000 and X670 and not newer X870<

Memory is not certified to run at 6400mt/s.
Very few 9000 series CPU can achieve that for 100% stability.
What I would suggest is dropping the speeds to 6000mt/s, which every 9000 series CPU can achieve with 100% stability even with 64GB of RAM.
6400 and 6200MT/s speeds are just for "gamers" who need gaming stability and not actual stability

you are right about not being certified, but the memory is supported in ASUS Memory support list at this frequency (which then again would not mean it is supposed to run at this frequency, as now learned supposed).
Also, the KIT i got, is not the one with the label AMD EXPO on it, just Intel XMP 3.0 supported, so probably it is not the ideal match for the AMD system.
What i did is to actually just turn on the lever in BIOS frontpage setting , and this automatically sets frequency , timing etc. , eg. from "disabled" to "enabled" and this made go from 4800 to 6400 and is such recognized, but then as stated got me into trouble with AMDGPU real.
will see if can get to up to 6000 or 6200 as suggested.
