Help With Optimization

Post by CronWrath »

Hello all,

I'm brand new to F@H and have very little knowledge about computer hardware. In 2012, I purchased a computer with some inheritance money, but didn't have any knowledge of hardware then either. I tried to future proof as best I could, so I probably have some decent specs, but it's probably not a great combination altogether. I've been folding for one whole day, but according to my task manager, my GPU is only working at 2%, while my CPU is consistently above 80%. I'll share my specs, according to F@HControl, if anyone wants to give me some advice:

CPU: Intel (R) Core (TM) i7-3770K CPU @ 3.50GHz
CPU ID: GenuineIntel Family 6 Model 58 Stepping 9
CPUs: 8
Memory: 11.96GiB
Free Memory: 3.54GiB
Threads: WINDOWS_THREADS
OS Version: 6.2
OS: Windows 10 Home
OS Arch: AMD64
GPUs: 1
GPU 0: Bus: 1 Slot: 0 Func: 0 AMD: 5 R575A (Radeon R7 250X/HD 7700/8760)

Also, should I be concerned at all about overheating anything? I downloaded CoreTemps and my CPUs run upwards of 95C.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Welcome to Folding@Home!

1) Task manager 'lies' GPUs, it is showing how much CPU time is spent feeding your GPU. While there are many app for seeing the GPU utilization, I prefer the sensors tab of GPU-Z it will tell you way more than you need to know.
https://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/

2) It is always best to make sure your GPU drivers are up to date.
https://www.amd.com/en/support/graphics ... on-r7-250x

3) There is a good chance using 4 threads (F@H calls them CPUs) will be with in 20% of using all 8 threads. And cooler.

Open FAHControl, click Configure, click Slots, and select cpu then click Edit.
On this screen is an option to set the number of threads you will use. Again, F@H calls them CPUs. By default F@H sets this to -1 meaning let the software decide.
You can click the up arrow to 4, and say OK and Save until you are at the main screen then choose Exit.

Ask more questions if you want more help, a copy of the first 200 lines of your Log would help us help.

Thanks for the help!

I downloaded the GPU-Z; very helpful!

I updated my drivers through windows. I assume that there aren't updates if I check and it says they're up to date?

I have set my CPUs to 4 threads, no change on the temp yet, but I just changed them, so we'll see in the morning.

Here is my log. Hopefully it's useful and not too long. I did try messing around with some configuration stuff, but I think it's all back to where it should be.

If you are doing GPU folding, you will want to update your drivers using a download from AMD, not through Windows Update. MS driver installers leave out the OpenCL support that is required for folding.

As Joe_H says, you want updates from AMD. MS updates will shut down Folding. Your log says
14:52:14:OpenCL Device 0: Platform:0 Device:0 Bus:1 Slot:0 Compute:1.2 Driver:3075.13

I am not sure how recent 3075.13 is but I think it is 2018. I linked above to the latest.

Your log show a great deal of detail about how a new install gets ready to fold, but as far as I read, it shows no problems.

You have 8 CPUs but will use one for GPU support so it shifts to 7, but F@H hates large primes and multiples of large primes, so it shifts to 6 and requests a Work Unit.
14:53:16:WU00:FS00:Requesting new work unit for slot 00: cpu:6 from 129.32.209.201

It recognizes your GPU and requests a Work Unit for it
14:53:16:WU01:FS01:Requesting new work unit for slot 01: gpu:1:0 R575A [Radeon R7 250X/HD 7700/8760] from 206.223.170.146

You receive an Core_a7 WU for you CPU and the program realizes it has no idea how to run an a7 core and downloads the correct Core
14:53:21:WU00:FS00:Received Unit: id:00 state:DOWNLOAD error:NO_ERROR project:16927 run:15 clone:784 gen:137 core:0xa7 unit:0x00000310000000890000421f0000000f
14:53:21:WU00:FS00:Downloading core from http://cores.foldingathome.org/win/64bi ... ore_a7.fah

It knows you are running 64 bit windows and that your CPU has a 256 bit AVX SIMD unit so uses it. This is the best Core_a7 knows about, so you are top notch here. (Core_a8 is newer but you did not get an a8 WU. Both a7 and a8 are rurrent CPU cores)

Then it starts folding on your CPU
14:53:25:WU00:FS00:FahCore 0xa7 started

It finds the Floating Point math SIMD engine and uses it
14:53:25:WU00:FS00:0xa7: SIMD: avx_256

Then it finishes the download of the Core_22 GPU WU and realizes it has never run one of those before and downloads Core_22 (There may be Core_21 WUs still out there, but I have not seen one in a year)
14:53:32:WU01:FS01:Received Unit: id:01 state:DOWNLOAD error:NO_ERROR project:17433 run:0 clone:835 gen:66 core:0x22
14:53:32:WU01:FS01:Downloading core from http://cores.foldingathome.org/win/64bi ... ore_22.fah

Again, we can see it knows you are on 64 bit Windows

We can see it knows you are running the OpenCL version of Core_22 on an AMD GPU
14:53:53:WU01:FS01:Running FahCore: "C:\Program Files (x86)\FAHClient/FAHCoreWrapper.exe" C:\ProgramData\FAHClient\cores/cores.foldingathome.org/win/64bit/22-0.0.13/Core_22.fah/FahCore_22.exe -dir 01 -suffix 01 -version 706 -lifeline 13924 -checkpoint 15 -opencl-platform 0 -opencl-device 0 -gpu-vendor amd -gpu 0 -gpu-usage 100

We run out of log before either process their WUs, but ideally you can see that happening now.

If you are doing GPU folding, you will want to update your drivers using a download from AMD, not through Windows Update. MS driver installers leave out the OpenCL support that is required for folding.
So the driver you posted is for the Radeon R7 250X, which is what the FAHControl says, but I actually have a Radeon HD 7700 GHz. I'm not sure why it's listing both. Maybe it can't tell the difference or they're equivalent? Either way, AMD doesn't have a driver specifically for the 7700GHz, but it does have a driver for the 7770Ghz. Are these the same driver-wise?

Also, as far as my temps go, I keep seeing that they shouldn't be at 90C if I want them to last long. Is there a way to keep this down? Maybe just physically cleaning out my PC (it has been awhile)?

Thanks everybody for your help!

AMD makes a chip called Cape Verde internally, and by running it at different speeds, attaching more RAM, and enabling or disable more or less of the chip make about 20 different commercial cards, all with Cape Verde. Yours has 1 Ghz speed, (thus the name) 1 gigabyte of VRAM, and 640 shaders* enabled. It is the same chip and same number of shaders as the R7 250X, which has more RAM but a slower speed.

I expect the same driver to work. But here is a link right to your flavor.
https://www.amd.com/en/support/previous ... hz-edition

To lower temps you can continue to reduce the number of CPUs in the instructions above: try 2 CPUs and see if temps lower.

Here is a review of Cape Verde in 2012, as you can see above, they made many more 'flavors' later.

*Think of a shader (or stream processor) as a Floating Point Math engine, more of them does more folding.

As JimboPalmer has written, AMD used this Cape Verde chip in many cards over several years. Depending on the exact cards involved, many share the same PCI device ID number as used by the F@h client. The only way to distinguish between them involves using a third field that F@h currently does not use, and may not use in future clients as it doesn't change how the card will be used.

AMD does this across their lineup of GPUs. Often a card in a newer series is basically a renamed card using pretty much the same hardware as a card in an older series. In your case the HD 7770 GHz first sold in 2012 was sold as the OEM HD 8760 about a year later, and then as the R7 250X another year later. AMD was still selling a Cape Verde based card in 2016 as the R7 350 and OEM R7 450.

Bottom line:
As Jimbo and Joe have said in the details above, my Cape Verde and your Cape Verde may be called by different model numbers, but they'll still perform exactly the same steps with exactly the same drivers but at different overall speeds.

Thanks so much everyone! I've learned a lot and feel much more confident in my folding.

I'm not planning to right now, but when I do, what suggestions would anyone have about upgrades? I'm not sure what tech is the most outdated on my machine.

Also, I cleaned all the dust out of my case and lowered my temps from around 90-95C down to 50-60.

That is one heck of an improvement - Congratulations :)

As to upgrades ... Hmmm ... I'll stick my neck out here ... For folders looking for efficiency and highest throughput then for the most part the GPU is the focus (as long as everything else can support it) ... Add to that that currently NVIDIA GPUs have an advantage in that FaH can now utilise CUDA and generally seem to be less of a pain as far as drivers are concerned ... Therefore my thought would be look at picking up the best nvidia gpu you can ... However the issue at the moment is that all new gpus are just so price hiked due to current shortages that even my ASUS STRIX RTX3070 OC which I managed to get from a reputable reseller for UK£690 has been increased by ASUS now to UK£920 ... At the price I got is it wasn't cheap but it is a top notch gpu - at current price I wouldnb't buy it tbh ... watching the market and seeing what happens if you are in no hurry may well be a good move :)

Over the last few months, I have twice seen a decrease of about 25% in my daily PPD over a period of several days. In both instances, updating the Nvidia drivers on my primary Windows 10 rig returned my PPD to "normal". There were of course Windows updates as well (there always are) but it appeared to be the Nvidia driver update that solved the PPD issue. I do not understand why the mere availability of a new Nvidia driver would impact my PPD in this manner. Is this just coincidental with the reboot of the computer or is there possibly something else going on?

I would say that for Windows, up time definitely plays a role in performance, since process/threads and handles (for the CPU) seem to "hang". For the GPU part, from experience, I restart every 5 days max, but haven't observed a behavior like yours.

Thanks for the recommendation. Probably good advice to clean up the Windows 10 "debris field" on at least a weekly basis. Will make it a habit going forward.

Your opinions differ from mine. (That doesn't make either one of us right or wrong ... we just see things differently.)

My kits run for weeks without reboots. (When WindowsUpdate insists on a reboot, I try to postpone it, depending on what is being changed.)
Linux manages to run for months at a time without a reboot.

Driver updates for older GPUs are almost never important to FAH. Driver updates for new hardware can re-optimize the way the hardware performs FAH's calculations, but for the most part GPU drivers seem to be constantly fixing things for specific games. They rarely change anything that matters to FAH. [and no, I'm not a gamer]
