CUDA_PATH and Core22 v0.0.13

[Skufer]

As per the recent announcement (https://foldingathome.org/2020/09/28/fo ... a-support/) I was happy to see my rig picking up the new version of Core22 last night, however it does not appear to be working for me.

Upon attempting to create the CUDA contex, the core fails to proceed with the message "Error loading CUDA module: CUDA_ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND (301)" and falls back to OpenCl:

After Googling around a bit for OpenMM I found that this is possibly due to my having the NVIDIA GPU Computing Toolkit previously installed which has specified certain environmental paths, which in this case could be overriding those that Core22 expects:



I need to keep the NVIDIA GPU Computing Toolkit installed as is for other applications to function, please can anyone advise how I can also allow FAHCore22 v0.0.13 to use CUDA in this scenario?

If user have any CUDA toolkit installed then FAH seems to use that instead of the nvidia driver. That is not a good idea, FAH should always run using the nvidia driver for CUDA only.

Workaround could be in a cmd shell remove the CUDA environment settings temporarily and then start FAHclient from that command shell.

I had the exact same issue: Windows 7 pro 64 + NVIDIA RTX 2070 S

I didn't need the Toolkit so I removed it to solve the issue; but I had to set opencl-index to 0 (others to -1) to get the FAHCore22 v0.0.13 running.

Wondering: Couldn't figure exactly what file(s) the FAHCore/Client needs from NVIDIA. Is this the runtime DLL, such as cudart64_110.dll ? If so, at what location ?

I had the exact same issue: Windows 7 pro 64 + NVIDIA RTX 2070 S

I didn't need the Toolkit so I removed it to solve the issue; but I had to set opencl-index to 0 (others to -1) to get the FAHCore22 v0.0.13 running.

Wondering: Couldn't figure exactly what file(s) the FAHCore/Client needs from NVIDIA. Is this the runtime DLL, such as cudart64_110.dll ? If so, at what location ?

For me, they're located in:

C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\FAHClient\cores\cores.foldingathome.org\win\64bit\22-0.0.13\Core_22.fah

These files are not from the NVIDIA local installation: not from the driver, and not from the toolkit. Correct ?

Correct. When the FAHCore is delivered, those files a packaged with it so that a separate SDK doesn't need to be installed. That's fine for folks who have not installed a SDK. Now there may need to be some bugs quashed where any of the potential SDK version is already installed --- when they happen to conflict with the ones included with the FAHCore.

Happening to me too, just downloaded F@H a couple of days ago -- I have CUDA toolkit installed, Windows 10 (and I need it for my actual work). But it did auto-detect OpenCL and is working fine (1.5M points/day on my Quadro RTX 6000). Would be happy to test any fix if I can be useful.

If you can't remove CUDA toolkit/SDK because you need it to code, you'll have to wait for a next release of the core that fixes this issue.

Some people suggested to remove environment variables (CUDA_PATH I guess) so that they doesn't interfere with FAH, and to use local/session variables when they are needed (at compilation time of your projects for instance).

I removed CUDA_PATH etc. but still no joy. Will wait for next release. Can't complain though, I'm getting 3.2M pts/day with OpenCL.
