macOS Catalina local Online Inactive Not folding

Post by Dr.MORO »

Hi! My first post, as I need help ASAP.

Using latest macOS Catalina and F@h client, but recently stopped folding at all. Web interface moved to Power: Full/"While I'm working", but only Yellow and Ready, not Green and Running. FAHControl shows Client: local Online Inactive.

MacBookPro16,1 (16-inch, 2019), 2.4 GHz 8-core Intel Core i9, 32 GB 2667 MHz DDR4, AMD Radeon Pro 5500M 8M, 4 TB NVMExpress

Tried uninstalling and re-installing, but still same and not folding.
Clicking other things not changing the situation.

Need help to start folding @ home once again.

Thanks in advance!

There's been a recent problem with a folding core for OS X. If you uninstalled it completely, it should also empty the directory "/Library/Application\ Support/FAHClient/cores" (not ~/Library etc). Are you sure the folding cores were deleted before you re-installed?

The macOS uninstaller does not delete any data files.
You would need to manually delete any stuck core A8 work unit.

I think the command line could also work.
Something like (completely untested):
FAHClient —send-command delete 00
Don’t try this unless someone verifies it first.

I uninstalled FAH and deleted A8 of cores. However, no improvement was available.
I expected 7.6.9 (released 17-Apr) might work, but download is not permitted.

@hiron138

Not sure if this is the same issue but both of my iMacs stopped folding last week with the error message WU00:FS00:FahCore returned: INTERRUPTED (102 = 0x66)". May have been related to WU 16810 although that no longer seems to be an issue. My remedy:
1. Stop FAH Control
2. Delete the FAH Work folder at /Library/Application Support/FAHClient/ Note: Administrator password required.
3.Restart FAH Control

Worked for me.

A fixed version of Core_A8 was released late Friday and should download if the bad version was deleted. Easiest way to get current copies of the folding cores is to remove the cores folder in /Library/Application Support/FAHClient with folding stopped. When folding is resumed, new copies of the folding cores will be downloaded as needed.

Project 16810 is the only one currently in full release that uses Core_A8, but there are some projects that will be coming in the near future that will also use it. Projects using Core_A7 were not part of this issue.

Next, I started by deleting the "work" folder, and re-started F@H.
Nope, FAHControl shows Client: local Updating Inactive, and the web control client just continues flashing & reloading every second annoyingly.
Returned "work' folder back where it was. But flashing continues. Not good.

Then, removed the core folder entirely, but flashing continues. However, the FAHControl say Client: local Online Running.
Yet still, no folding, and checking the newly generated log in FAHControl app, it's just a string of errors:

Code: Select all

Should I just uninstall FAH by the uninstaller, and delete the /Library/Application Support/FAHClient folder, then re-install?
Just a bit worried that my account info will be lost when restarting FAH.

Any additional help and advice would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Ok, just removed 'cores' and 'work' folders left behind after the uninstall, and re-installed FAH from latest downloaded macOS client.
No new 'cores' folder created somehow, and FAHControl app shows Client: local Updating Inactive.
Newest log is like this, showing a different error, perhaps. Totally lost of what is going on here... :(

You just need to unpause folding.

Nope, done that. Still 'Client: local Updating Inactive'
No folding, no updating, nothing happening with FAH.

Ok, checked Activity Monitor, and noticed two (2) FAHClient were running. Quit one of them, and now Client: local Connecting Inactive.
Some progress?
Yes, all the cores are actually at full throttle now. Yet somehow still Client: local Connecting Inactive, though. Web client page also trying to connect, but not fully loading. Weird...
Noticed new 'cores' and 'work' folders have been created as well. Getting there???

I will restart my Mac, and see what happens.

Present new log as follows:

Re: macOS Catalina local Online Inactive Not folding

Post by Dr.MORO »

Hmmm, I may have spoke too soon... :(
Once again, in the middle of a new work unit, FAH has stopped folding somehow. I tried to pause the folding by clicking the web client to 'Light' & 'Only when idle'. I did pause, but once trying to restart the folding, setting to light or medium and 'While I'm working', it does not fold and stays inactive.
More strangely, when setting to 'Full' and 'While I'm working', it DOES start folding again!!! WTH???
So, now my issue is I can fold, but only at FULL, but not at medium nor light. Super weird...
Something not working with the web control and the FAHControl app???

Okay, so there is a delay for about a minute until the web control reconfigures everything and starts folding again.

ALL GOOD NOW!!!

I AM FOLDING!

Thanks everyone!

Generally speaking, you can fold on all CPUs and still run most daily applications without much slowdown and/or user impact. Give it a shot and see what happens. I am glad that you got it working in the end :)

Thanks! Yes, I know I CAN run at FULL all day, folding at very fast pace.
I just do not like the fan blasting at full power all day while I'm working on in. ;)
I just crank it up just before I go to bed, and ramp down right after I wake up next morning. TON of folding while I sleep.
