Great that the RTX 3080 was added so fast to the GPU.txt.

I just updated mine and started folding.
With default settings and silent BIOS profile on my Gigabyte RTX 3080 Gaming OC it's humming along with:

Temp: 69 C
GPU load: 39% (Can I put more load on the GPU?)
PPD hovers around 4 000 000 halfway into the first WU.

A bit hard to see what the actual power consumption of the GPU is.
like, is it 334W? (add 51.5W)?

It appears that the GPU is power capped. Not temperature capped like the 2000 series GPUs.
Meaning, add power with MSI afterburner, and it should operate even faster!

Thanks for taking time to run F@H on your RTX 3080 and sharing the results. My suggestion would be to get HFM.NET (https://github.com/harlam357/hfm-net) which can easily collect stats on your client when GPU folding making it easy to share the information

Thanks for the info. I remember this from like 10 years ago. Allowed to track folding on multiple computers. It also didn't work so well, but that was also actually over 10 years ago now lol.

Anyways here is my log from running all night. (Edit: Apparently posts are limited to 60,000, so i'll just do a snipet).

Temps are the same and clock speed hasn't changed much. My my observations from working on the review, it seems the RTX 3080 will sustain 2000Mhz+ if the GPU load isn't 100%. I thought it was a CPU bound thing since only at 4K did the clock speed seemly drop to 1900~ Mhz. But it seems this doesn't apply to Blender and video encoding and allows the NVIDIA boost to stay at 2000+

I guess it has to do with what the Core is using mathematical wise. Kinda like Intels AVX in a way. I didn't find anything in the NVIDIA whitepapers stating this, but so far it seems to point to something like this. I am using the MSI RTX 3080 Gaming X TRIO BTW. I have other things to do with the Founders so I can't fold with it.

AVX is a reasonable equivalent (though not quite the same). It's processing FP OPs as fast as it can and at double the rate an older CPU would be able to do them by double-pumping the FPU. Depending on how the hardware is laid out on the chip it might even be creating local heating while other parts of the chip are mostly idle. How would you limit the processing to the FPU other than to slow down all the other CPU functions?

A general benchmark program that has a reasonable mix of Integer and FP ops would not give the same overclocking stability recommendations as one which focuses just on AVX.

Great that the RTX 3080 was added so fast to the GPU.txt.

I just updated mine and started folding.
With default settings and silent BIOS profile on my Gigabyte RTX 3080 Gaming OC it's humming along with:

Temp: 69 C
GPU load: 39% (Can I put more load on the GPU?)
PPD hovers around 4 000 000 halfway into the first WU.

It appears that the GPU is power capped. Not temperature capped like the 2000 series GPUs.
Meaning, add power with MSI afterburner, and it should operate even faster!

I'd be intrigued to see if the GPU load varies project to project ... might it be the atom counts/calculations in the WUs just can't load up the GPU enough - kindof like the issues people were seeing with some of the moonshot porjects not loading up their faster GPUs (2080ti and such).

At 180W, is right about where I run my 2080Tis. Funny enough I get very similar temps and performance (3,2-4,2M PPD on average).
I'm hoping the core clocks can be increased by at least 100Mhz (2100Mhz), as that is the clocks I'm getting on an air cooled Asus Rog Strix.

I can't post pictures here but I linked it. I didn't check very often but the GPU load and clock speed didn't change much per WU. Power draw is around 340. Though the limit of this MSI card is 346. Founders Edition is 370 once you raise the Power Target to 115%.

Overall the PPD is anywhere from 2 Mill to 4.5 depending on the WU given. I averaged 3.3 Mill from only 18 hours. https://folding.extremeoverclocking.com ... =&u=857432

I suspect the screen shot PPD from the lower end of the scale, but the example shown doesn't seem very impressive and is maybe not representative for other reasons. I would expect with these card like the previous gen that the top level cards give wildly different ppd with different projects and atom counts. I am always concerned that ppd reported is frequently the upper outlier so it is refreshing to see what I assume is the lower outlier reported.

For the record, my 2080Ti averages 3.5m PPD with very little variation.

I'm wondering if anyone understands the FaH cores well enough to be able to answer whether they will see any improvement from Ampere. The key piece of information is that 3080 and 2080Ti actually have the same number of cores under the cover, but the 3080 spec is doubled because it can do an extra FP32 calculation per cycle, but only if the software is designed to allow it.

Basically, with Turing, the cores could do 1INT+1FP32 instruction per cycle. If your program was written to perform one of each on every cycle then you would max out the capabilities of the Turing architecture.

With Ampere, the INT unit can optionally do an FP32 computation instead of an INT computation. This means that on any given cycle the program can do INT+FP32 or FP32+FP32. If your program previously did almost no INT computations and was maxing out the FP32 units, then it can run run twice as fast under Ampere. But, if you were already pairing INT+FP32 on every cycle then you will see no benefit from the spec that doubles the number of cores.

So, the potential gain here is dependent on how the FaH cores are written. If they have a lot of INT computations alongside their FP32 computations then Ampere will perform about as well as a Turing card that has half the stated cores.

And, it may explain why the 3080 performance seems about on par with the 2080Ti despite the advertised core counts.

@flarbear: I tend to agree with you.
There are 2 factors that give the benefit of the doubt to the 3080 though,
One being that the 3080 seems power limited, rather than thermal limited.
At 180W, my 2080Ti also runs at around 58C, although it needs195- 205W to keep up with the 3080 from what I read.
The 3080 may have some OC headroom, and stock runs a lot higher frequencies than the 2080Ti.

Second is, gamers nexus just did a pcie 3.0 vs 4.0 test, and latency wise, pcie 4.0 has a slight edge. This is the full size pcie 4.0 slot closest to the cpu.
He also did tests in games, that saw from 0.5 to 3.5% increase in performance, with an average hovering around 1-1.5% over gen 3.0

The question I would ask here, is, if the pcie 4.0 bandwidth also consumes 1.5% more energy than 3.0? If your system runs at 350W, the extra 3.5W may be worth it, but it may not if the power draw is more like 10W higher...
And performance and power draw on Pcie 4.0 vs 3.0, and x16, vs x8, vs 4.0x4 speeds also need to be tested.

Another thing to watch for is improvements in the drivers. This has happened in he past with the introduction of new hardware architectures, it may take several iterations of driver updates to optimize them to support the new features in the GPUs.
