AMD Radeon RX Vega M GPU causing BSOD

System specs: HP x360, Windows 10 Pro, Intel Core i7-8705G, Intel HD Graphics 630 GPU, AMD Radeon RX Vega M GL GPU, 16GB RAM

When FAH runs on the GPU it constantly (every 3-5 minutes) causes a BSOD. The errors are VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE (error 116) and ATTEMPTED_WRITE_TO_READONLY_MEMORY (error BE).

If I stop the GPU from processing FAH, then the system is stable.

Can anyone help with this? There are not any newer drivers for this on HP or AMD's support sites. The date for the drivers is 2018.

Some laptops run the Intel GPU normally to save power, then switch for intense loads to the better GPU. Since F@H does not support Intel GPUs it crashes before things get intense.

you may wish to look for some hint you can always use the AMD, with the caveat that it will use more power and run hotter and louder.

That driver is fairly old, I think current drivers show over 3000.

While you ALWAYS want a driver from AMD, that chip was sold by Intel, so drivers may be difficult to come by.

You might want to take a look at this topic - viewtopic.php?f=83&t=33047#p330091. Another person posted on what drivers they used to get their RX Vega M folding. The intel package with the AMD GPU and their Kaby Laky processor apparently is a bit picky about which drivers and OpenCL support are installed.

I tried that driver and it still crashes.

The BSOD might be heat-related. As a general rule, the performance of a laptop is limited by the hardware's ability to dissipate the heat.

I suggest you try folding on either the CPU or the GPU by itself. and see if that eliminates the crashes. You're not doing any good until you can eliminate the BSODs.

@bruce, I had a similar thought last night so I paused the CPU unit and let the GPU unit run. It has worked flawlessly. It finished 1 WU and is almost completed on another. How do tell the software to only do work on the GPU? Should I just delete the CPU unit?

To gracefully remove the CPU Slot, fist check if any WU was assigned to it. If yes, then in Advanced Control (FAHControl), you can right click the slot and select Finish. Once the WU is submitted, you can remove the CPU Slot by this:
Advanced Control (AKA FAHControl) -> Configure -> Slots tab -> CPU -> Remove -> Save
