do RX 570 4 GB work?
I apologize if this is not the correct forum for this question. Please move if necessary.
Has anyone with a 4 GB RX 570 been successful recently? It does not seem to matter what I do (new drivers, multiple tries, etc), I can't get a WU to succeed. My normal result is a crash of the Radeon control software, followed by the GPU not using any power or capacity.
I may need to return my card, but other AMD projects seem to work fine for me, as do games and graphics benchmarks.
Bottom line - has anyone successfully used a 4 GB RX 570?
Thanks,
Mark
P.S. This is under Windows 10 professional.

Yes RX 570 4GB is supported. FAH is very demanding on hardware, so a game stable GPU may fail for compute stablility.

Re: do RX 570 4 GB work?
I realize it is supported, I just want to know if anyone was successful recently. I am wondering if computing against the virus has worked in this configuration. Like I said, other GPU intensive projects (in particular Einstein@home, Milkway@home, and Amicable Numbers) have all worked for at least a day without issue.
Re: do RX 570 4 GB work?
I'm on a RX 570 with 8GB, which is the same chip. About lets say two weeks ago I met a few projects which produced error, most likely due to driver problems that need to be fixed by AMD. Apart from that - many WUs successfully completed since then, in fact all of them I believe. All of the WUs being COVID-19 as well, I think. So from my perspective: Everything fine with this setup.
What has been experienced though is reducing the clock speed a bit helping with stability. For my individual GPU it hasnt been neccessary, but there are positive reports about that approach. Are you on (factory-side) OC? If yes, maybe give it a try. If no - maybe also give it a try.
Are you monitoring other factors such as temps, etc?

Re: do RX 570 4 GB work?
Please post segments of FAH's log. We need the first couple pages of the log where FAH detects the hardware and sets it up plus segments showing the errors. What messages are you getting when it crashes and what WUs were active?mwroggenbuck wrote:I can't get a WU to succeed. Interesting thought about the clock speed. I was using the default factory settings. I will lower those a bit. If it works, then I know my card needs to be replaced.
Stay posted.

Re: do RX 570 4 GB work?
I reduced the clock speed by 10%. So far, things are working great! I will let it run overnight to be sure, but I have already requested an RMA.
I should have thought of clock speed, but since I was NOT overclocking, I did not. Apparently, this hardware was right on the edge.
I will update this thread as I know more, but it looks like we found the problem.
Thanks for all who helped.

Re: do RX 570 4 GB work?
So many GPUs come from the factory overclocked, it becomes something people don't think of as a possible issue. nVidia and AMD spec their reference values for the GPU chips they sell to be stable for video and calculations. The cards overclocked by the manufacturer are just guaranteeing stability for video purposes such as gaming. It can make difference.
Both companies also sell "Pro" cards for the number crunching market. While often using the same chips, they cost much more. If you examine their specs, often they run at a slightly reduced clock rate compared to the consumer cards. Part of that is to produce less heat in systems, but some is also for additional computational stability.

Re: do RX 570 4 GB work?
Well, the card ran all night without issue, so the problem was definitely stability versus the clock speed. I did check and the manufacturer had the clocks at the AMD specifications. As far as I can tell, there was no over clocking involved. I guess the hardware was right on the edge. I have an RMA and will send out for a replacement today. It will be interesting to see if a new card acts any differently.
Again, thanks for all the help. If the forum has a debugging thread some place, it might be nice to mention trying to under clock the GPU

Re: do RX 570 4 GB work?
I received my replacement card today. I downloaded FAH. Then I downloaded GPUs.txt and manually created a GPU slot. Things look like they ran fine until the very end. Then it looked like it failed and did not upload a result.
Here is the log snippet
I think that my card is actually OK.
Did I do something wrong? I did stop the job (exit from FAH), and restarted later. It looked like it started properly from a checkpoint file
I would appreciate any thoughts.

Re: do RX 570 4 GB work?
It's good to see that you didn't loose the WU and instead, it fell back to the last good checkpoint. In this case, I would think that it is related to "storage" issues, i.e. a failing hard disk, faulty SSD, an anti-virus/anti-malware/anti-spyware/anti-ransomeware application potentially messing with the files:
20:15:14:WU00:FS00:0x22:Folding@home Core Shutdown: FINISHED_UNIT
20:15:16:WARNING:WU00:FS00:FahCore returned an unknown error code which probably indicates that it crashed
20:15:16:WARNING:WU00:FS00:FahCore returned: UNKNOWN_ENUM (-1073740940 = 0xc0000374)
I would add an exception to anti-* to exclude this folder (and it's files and sub-folders):
C:\Users\mrogg\AppData\Roaming\FAHClient
Also, since you're folding only on the GPU, this checkpoint value will be ignored. Instead, the GPU will create a checkpoint at a percentage which is between 2% and 5% IIRC and is done by the researcher.

Re: do RX 570 4 GB work?
Thanks for the information. I ran all night and processed 3 WUs without issue (all uploaded their information). You may be right about the "anti-" software. However, I suspect that falling back to a checkpoint was also part of the problem. Or maybe a GPU only slot.
If I have to stop, would it make more sense to pause rather than exit? I suspect that would not fall back to a checkpoint, but I am not sure about GPU.

Re: do RX 570 4 GB work?
From what I can see, pause and exit do the same thing to a GPU slot.
I have move my installation to a non system drive. My user owns everything on it, so there should be no permission problems. I don't know about the "anti-" stuff. I will let this run for a bit, then stop and restart it. I will check if it recovers from a checkpoint and go from there.

Re: do RX 570 4 GB work?
Well, even after I installed FAH on a different drive, I still had and error if I stopped and recovered from a checkpoint
I will look though my "anti-" stuff, but I do not hold much hope.
Note that this is not the exact same error as the previous run.
Question:
Does anyone have a log file that shows an AMD GPU recover from a checkpoint that successfully uploads?

I will look though my "anti-" stuff, but I do not hold much hope.
Note that this is not the exact same error as the previous run.
Question:
Does anyone have a log file that shows an AMD GPU recover from a checkpoint that successfully uploads?
