Connection Errors on new install?

Post by scollinguk »

Hi There,

I have just installed F@H on a new machine and am not connecting. I am aware of not being allocated WU units at the moment but this seems to be a different error. Can anyone help, recent logs below:

Hi Scott,

I cannot reach this IP address either. I assume that it's related to the flood from the very sudden and rapid expansion of F@h's userbase in the past several days. The error with this server is likely related to this: viewtopic.php?f=61&t=32424
F@h is now the top computing platform on the planet and nothing unites people like a dedicated fight against a common enemy. This virus affects all of us. Lets end it together.

Hi Jesse,

I thought it could be but 192.0.0.0 is a LAN subnet not an internet subnet so that makes me think it isnt. I also have another computer which is waiting for a WU to become available and it doesnt have this error message, it just has an error that no WU units are availalbe.

These are the reasons why i think it seems to be a configuration error rather than the problem you linked.

Cheers,

Scott

Ah, you're right. I thought that IP address was publicly routable but it is indeed reserved. I'm not sure how that could happen. Perhaps a DNS issue?

I've actually just found this previous issue which seems to be the same: viewtopic.php?f=81&t=32042

It seems that by disabling the GPU slot in the F@H configuration it has removed the error (but isnt going to use the GPU for folding). I am hoping Bruce (who solved the issue on the link above) it able to see this and do the same fix though. I've got a Radeon 5870 so should hit the deadlines as its slightly more powerful that the card in the link.

The 5690 no longer meets the requirements, the 5870 does. If you look up your card, current minimum is OpenCL 1.2 and support for double precision calculations. There are lists of AMD and nVidia GPU's on wikipedia that are useful for quick checks on whether a card is usable.

Because of the way the GPUs.txt file was originally created and cards added, and the use of older chip series in later card series by AMD, and to a lesser extent nVidia; some cards are still listed as "supported", but are not. As we identify them and someone has a chance to update the file they get marked as unsupported. But in the meantime the server software redirects WU requests to an IP in the reserved 192.0.2.n range. From what I understand, the next version of the client will get a message documenting the reason and request the GPU be disabled for folding.

Your messages are mostly related to the heavy load on the server from all of the new persons and systems added since the weekend. It does look like you have received a CPU WU and one for a GPU. It may take a bit of time to get more WU's

You can ignore the 10053 messages, those are from Web Control not properly closing its connection, they are on the list ti be fixed in the next version of the client.

"No WUs available for this configuration" is a common error now due to the very fast influx of new users into Folding@home. Everyone is consuming workunits faster than they can be made available. The research teams are spinning up new servers and putting new projects (including COVID-19 work) into the queue to keep up with demand. Keep everything online and the software should pick up new work when its available. The situation should clear up over the next couple of days I think.

As I answered 3 posts above yours, 10053 errors can be ignored.

Thanks, makes sense, i've removed the GPU slot and i can see its working now and also has a WU for the CPU to work on.

i'm curious, where are those requirements listed? i'm looking at the Folding at home windows Requirements (can't post link because new user) and it just says 4xx series and up with OpenCL compatability

I know the requirements (the GPU must support OpenCL 1.2 and be able to perform Double Precision floating point math (FP64) But I am not sure where they are documented.

Until 'recently' only Single Precision was required, and even still some cards that only claim OpenCL 1.1 compatibility actually have enough 1.2 features to fold.

On the desktop, this mostly rules out cards from before 2015, but some laptops will fail even up to 2017 designs.

As the software does more and better science it required the hardware to be capable of more and better science.
