I saw that the forum is being upgraded to a phpbb3. What is the difference?

As long as the quick reply boxes resurface, and the [code] blocks include scrollbars, i will be happy.

Good Luck UF, i hope it all goes to plan.

Scrolling code boxes are definitely there. Quick reply isn't, in a vanilla phpbb3 installation. It may resurface as a MOD (to begin with, I'd prefer to keep the software unaltered, except for security patches)

It's the best and easier way to maintain it ... and it would avoid security holes that might be included with mods ;)

Really? What are you using as a basis for that statement? What's your proof? Have a lot of experience with running a PHPbb3 forum?

Or it could leave a hole open that a Mod might fix better than one of the security patches. Without a basis for your statement, you're just guessing.

I'm basing on how phpbb mods work ...

For a phpbb update without mod, it's easy and fast to upgrade (juste replace the upgraded files). ;)

But if you have mods installed, you can't do that because of the altered files ... so you have to manually edit all updated files ... or to overwrite them, and then edit them for the mod to be restored ... it's not very easy and takes time :(

When I owned a phpBB board, I found that the secret to security and updating was to carefully research my 10-12 mods before installing them. I selected only those that had a history of support, security, and updates when phpBB updated. At most, it took 30-60 minutes to do a full update, mods included.

Just my 2 cents' worth.

I'm really looking forward to seeing the new board. Any chance we can get a logo up there in place of phpBB's default? :D

That's exactly why I want to keep this board MOD free if possible. Since I'm doing a full version upgrade, rather than a minor version upgrade, it's going to take longer because the entire database needs converting.

Changing the logo is easy, we just need something nice to change it to.

How about a smaller version of this:

And then just chop the "download" section from the left side.

If you replace the "Download Folding@Home" text by "Folding Forum", yes it's better ;)
