560 GTX vs. Fermi/Core_17.fah/FahCore_17.exe

Post by suprleg »

Just setup a new Win7 pro blade running a fresh 7.4.4 install with an NVIDIA 560 GTX card using 327.23 32-bit drivers.
Each time the server downloads a FahCore_17.exe wu Windows gives an error msg.:From event viewer

I'm forced to shutdown the server and delete the work directory, upon restart if I'm given a FahCore_15.exe wu everything runs beautifully..
Sorry, I searched somewhat, realizing this has probably been discussed in detail....ideas?
Links to appropriate posts would be great. :)

Can youpost your log? Details here viewtopic.php?p=261081&f=24#p261081. It may or may not help, but the Windows error log isn't much help.

As always please include the fah log showing the crash.

How much is the GPU overclocked?
How to provide enough information to get helpful support

I have cpu -2 and gpu -1 set for slots.
Also I'm not sure if this log reflects my current 327.23 drivers, however since this partial log was generated I've had more "0x17" failures with nvidia's 327.23 intalled. Again, "0x15" wu's run flawlessly..

How much is the GPU overclocked?

After this "0x15" wu completes I'll let the server generate a full log-file that reflects a "0x17" wu as soon as one is downloaded.
Thanks for the help.

Server downloaded a "0x17" wu and as per usual my Windows7 pro box gave the same error msg:"FahCore_17.exe has stopped working", with the only option available being, "close program". After choosing [close program] fah log shows the following warning: 10:19:14:WARNING:WU00:FS01:FahCore returned: FAILED_3 (255 = 0xff)
If I ignore the windows error msg the GPU client simply "hangs" showing the following ETA's:10.20 days/TPF 2.26hrs ...by the way these time estimates never change regardless of "0x17" wu downloaded.
Additionally the 560GTX statistics:GPU usage 2-4%, GPU Temp. 31.0 C....these are the gpu's normal operating stats with NO background apps running, in other words fah isn't utilizing the gpu.
Again, as soon as I download a "0x15" wu things will take off again and appear all's well, therefore the problem for me lies between windows and "FahCore_17.exe".
Oddly though I'm unable to find any information regarding this problem, hard to believe I'm the only person ever to have this issue..

*Yes I realize I'm having some DNS issues, thanks*, however that's a completely different issue.
Thanks for any useful responses.

What is the source for the GPU drivers that you are using on this system? Core_17 uses OpenCL while Core_15 uses CUDA to process WU's, drivers downloaded through Windows Update or provided by the OEM may not include OpenCL support. If the download was directly from nVidia, make certain the OpenCL support is installed.

Ah, thanks for that. How would I go about verifying OpenCl support? Yes the 327.23 drivers were downloaded from NVIDIA directly.

If the download was directly from nVidia, make certain the OpenCL support is installed.
Ah, thanks for that. How would I go about verifying OpenCl support? Yes the 327.23 drivers were downloaded from NVIDIA directly.
In doing a little more research I'm finding Nvidia has *no or limited* OpenCL support in their drivers...I'm wondering how people are utilizing Core_17 wu's on their NVIDIA cards..a Teamate of mine does well with a 550Ti.. :e?:

What is the source of that research because it is wrong, and I would like that misinformation wiped clean. When I can fold core 17 WUs on my GT 430, anything newer should fold ever better.

If I had to guess, it's either a driver issue, and you should use a driver cleaner, then reinstall v327.xx, or it's a power issue, because core 17 pulls more juice.

1.Countless Nvidia forum posts, including developer input.
2.Drivers have been thoroughly "scrubbed" and v327.23 re-installed.
3. I think a Corsair 850 provides adequate power to the GTX560.
*4. " I would like that misinformation wiped clean."...yes, so would I, be very happy if you could help me dispel these unfounded rumors and innuendo.

Power issues include loose connections, overloaded rails if the PSU has more than one, etc.

NV devs? That I would like to see.

OpenCL is still a developing standard, so there are various ways of looking at "limited" support, but with the right drivers, the NV's support is enough to work with the current version of Core_17. Is better support improve what FAH can do through OpenCL? Most decidedly yes but it should work with the NV-provided drivers provided you've cleaned out earlier versions and provided Windows Update doesn't come along and "fix" what isn't broken.

Follow the other suggestions provided above.
