Is this GPU too weak to bother with?

I have an Nvidia 8400 GS, it's quite old and I am wondering if it can do any useful work?

Since it is a Pre-Fermi GPU, it can still fold FahCore_11 WUs. However, do note that FahCore_11 WUs have gone End Of Life (EOL) so it may be stopped sometime in the future (https://folding.stanford.edu/home/remin ... -core78-2/).

In the Folding slots section of FAH control
the gpu is listed but status reads: Paused:no gpu access
Does this mean it is essentially idle and won't be called on to do any work?
DOes it need any specific configuration? or should I just give up and remove it from the slot?

I haven't come across that message before. Can you please post the log file including the initial section so we can see the system configuration and F@H settings? Also, what drivers are you using on your system?

You can not GPU fold if running as a service in Win7. Microsoft, in its infinite wisdom, decided that access to the video subsystem by any service is a security breach and stops it cold.

Please put the log verbosity back to the default value of 3. At 3, only changes to the default values are shown and that makes it much simpler to detect when something that should not be changed has been.

Is this the problem then - it is running gpu as a service? I assume I will have to reinstall the client if this is the case
How do I determine if the client is running as a service and not as a normal program?

I have just downloaded the very latest Nvidia drivers.

Your system info says you are: 13:39:40:Win32 Service: true

and yes, the easiest way (not the only way) to solve this is to re-install the client from scratch.

I will wait for the current WU to complete and then install the client not as a service.
Will then give the GPU a go.

Have re-einstalled the client as a non service. And so far results look bad. The GPU is running but my points per day are down to about 8000 as apposed to
about 17000 which was when I was running just the CPU.
Also the time allotment to complete the GPU task is about 3 days which will never be met even if running 24/7.
Also when both the CPU and GPU are running the computer becomes too sluggish to use normally - just running the CPU means I can at least use the computer
for other work with no hinderence.
Had this same problem on another computer with a better GPU and in that case resolved to just fold with a CPU.

Regarding the drop in points, it will take time to reflect the actual production once ~5% of the WU is completed since it is a fresh installation. In short, let is fold for a few hours and then you can get a good estimate. The same applies for the deadline. Best option is to leave it overnight and see what happens.

Screen lag is something that the hardware vendors and OS manufacturers will have to sort out, nothing that PG can do for now. You can either stop folding on your GPU or configure it to fold only when your system is idle and it can meet the deadline of the assigned WU.

Assuming your system is not constrained by either power or heat limitations, you'll need to choose between to configurations.
1) Folding with a GPU slot plus folding with 6 CPU threads
2) Folding with 8 CPU threads.

To compare the two, you'll have to run "a long time" before the PPD estimates stabilize or you'll have to calculate the PPD from the TPF values once they stabilize. Adding two more CPU threads will provide a slight increase in CPU throughput but by much less than 8:6 ... (a 33% increase) since the CPU is HyperThreaded. If your system seems sluggish when folding with the GPU, it could be what's commonly called "screen lag" and that may induce you to limit GPU folding to when you're not using the system. (There's a setting for pause when active.)
