#937 F@H not working since moving to university

Hey guys, I just started folding again before moving to uni and everything was going smoothly. I got to uni with 2 WU completed and they were trying to send for days but never sent and expired. I've just re installed the client and now it won't even let me download any work units, so I'm pretty sure the problem is being on a new network at uni as it all worked fine before. My internet is working fine (I'm using it to post this right now) so not too sure what the problem is.

Someone has told me the issue appears to be with the ports but I have absolutely no idea how to solve that.

Talk to your campus IT persons. They may have a firewall or proxy server in place that you will have adjust your network settings to comply with. They may even have a policy that precludes you using F@H, and violating that would also be a violation of the terms of use for F@H. If they do, you can ask them to change that policy, but that you would have to inquire about that first. Otherwise you may be only able to fold when at home.

A little more on the "ports" issue: From reading the log you provided, it is certain that your U. has some sort of proxy because they're blocking port 8080. FAH is designed to prefer port 8080 but it does not require it. When it is unable to use port 8080, it reverts to port 80 which is the same port used by your browser so it can pass through the proxy as long as they allow internet connections.

Something strange is happening, however when it tries to use port 8080 again. I need to get some more information before I can give you a clear answer.

Please post the first couple pages of the log, including your system hardware descriptions and the listing of your configuration. Perhaps you've changed a setting that has disrupted the server's logic. If you did not change things, then there's nothing you can fix ... it's a server problem ... but I don't know yet.

I've split the statements in the log you posted initially into two sections, one for Slot 00 and one for Slot 01. I see a few things that I didn't expect. I need more information from Stanford to explain them. If you did make changes to the default configuration, I suggest you reinstall and show what happens if you accept the default config.xml or explain every change that you've made. (That's why I asked to see the part of the log that shows the changes you've made (but with the passkey masked, which is what I expect to see.)

I didn't change any settings since moving to unviersity from home and I already re-installed it once but that didn't work either. I'm doing a clean windows 7 install today (unrelated) so I'll see what happens after that and post the log :) Thanks for the help

Glad to see a ticket opened on this for v6 client feature continuity, as it must be set as a minimum requirement feature for V7. V7 should be as good or better in all things, IMO.

Jcoffland's note on that ticket RE: #937:

"To me this is a minor issue. A few extra connection attempts on clients who have outgoing connects to port 8080 blocked by a firewall does not seem like a huge problem. Are there negative results other than a slight delay extra network traffic which I'm missing here?"

I suspect that aside from the ticket issue, the main reason for being unable to send results is probably due to the campus firewall/proxy server, particularly if it's the Microsoft server platform. Squid-based firewalls are generally pretty good about it (when properly configured for the oft-large packets).

Couldn't the failed addresses and failed ports ( whether 80 or 8080 ) just be tested in the web browser from campus. When I tested a few, I just get blank pages, no error pages; the :80 gets stripped and just shows the ip but I think it resolved. Just a thought to take the client out of the equation.

From your browser, port 80 is always stripped off. It's the browser's default port so specifying it is redundant.

FAH uses 8080 as it's default. That works almost everywhere, including from home, but not from the university. FAH should revert to 80 only after 8080 fails. The problem is that V7 does not fully revert to port 80 from the university.

Install V6 and I'll bet it works. (Post the log, either way.)

A fundamental question: The log you posted shows V7 attempting to get a WU for 5 minutes. Please post a log showing 20 minutes.

Ok guys, I've just finished reinstalling windows so F@H is a fresh install and it is still not working. I'll leave it ~20 minutes and then post the log as you suggested. Update coming soon, thanks for the help, it is appreciated :)

BUMP - Any ideas guys? I'd like to sort it today as I'm quite busy through the week next week so will have little time to sort it and would be able to leave it folding for quite a while :)
