Empty work server assignment for HD4000 series GPU

It seems that a lot of GPU problems revolve around specific versions of drivers. Though AMD has their own support structure, you can often learn from information reported by others who fold.

Empty work server assignment for HD4000 series GPU

Post by AYColumbia »

Hi,
My GPU has been stuck at "Ready" for almost 2 days now and I decided it's time to peruse the forum. Sounds like I have this issue? The status is currently and has been "Download" with Unknown. I can shut down the FAH client and bring it back up, but it just goes back to the same status. The CPU is folding just fine and this is only on the GPU. While looking for a possible solution here, here's what my log is filling up with:

Code: Select all

20:35:39:WU00:FS00:Connecting to assign-GPU.stanford.edu:80
20:35:39:WU00:FS00:News: Welcome to Folding@Home

20:35:39:WU00:FS00:Connecting to assign-GPU.stanford.edu:8080
20:35:39:WU00:FS00:News: Welcome to Folding@Home

20:35:39:ERROR:WU00:FS00:Exception: Could not get an assignment
I've tried rebooting, restarting the client, specifically pausing/resuming/finishing specifically on the GPU slot without success. Any suggestions on getting the GPU folding again shy of uninstalling everything and reinstalling? Thanks much.

Different issue. You have no problem exiting and restarting.

What model GPU?
How to provide enough information to get helpful support

Sapphire Radeon HD 4870. I copied the detailed info from CCC. BTW, I never had this issue with the old v6 and this is the first it happened since I updated to v7. I think I started using v7 about 3 weeks ago so it hasn't been long. Also, I don't want to hijaak this thread. Should a new thread be created for this issue? Thank you.

The Pande Group announced over a year ago that they were removing support and projects that run on ATI Cards prior to the 5000 series. They thought the earliest they would run out of work for the ATI cards from the 4000 series and earlier would be last Fall, the supply started becoming scarce this Spring. As of a month ago they are almost gone, the occasional WU appears to get assigned and returned to the server. So you may not see another one for your 4870.

. . . and as far as anybody knows, it is identical for V6 and for V7. Pure chance, and a slimmer chance as every week passes.

Huh, I wonder why they did that. I'll have to search for the announcement to find out the reasons. I can't believe the irony in getting this reponse for me. Just a few hours ago, I decided to upgrade my HTPC from an HD 5670 to an HD 7750. So I'll be replacing my 4870 with the 5670 soon. Although it stinks because I have another computer that could have used the 4870 to fold in addition to its CPU which is a shame as it's still a pretty good video card.

ATI dropped support for CAL/Brook and transitioned to OpenCL so Stanford had to do the same. The HD5000 supports a more advanced version of OpenCL than the HD4000 and it's the minimum required for FAH.

All three of them are pretty good video cards, but just two of them will fold.

Since this is a different issue, I'm moving it to it's own thread.
