GPU Core Crashes (Or at least it doesn't work)

Hello,

The basic problem is that the GPU core is not working (although SMP seems fine). The same exact problem occurs on two very different computers.

I did a fresh install of the v7.1.52 client and accepted all the default options. On both computers, the GPU is recognized by the FaH client as “Cedar PRO [Radeon HD 5450]”. Additionally, GPU-Z recognizes it as the a "Radeon HD5450".

A few minutes after installation, the GPU slot displays a big red "FAILED" message. Below is a partial listing of the log. You'll see there are a lot of errors related to the GPU core.

Does anyone have a solution to this? It seems unlikely that both the FaH client and GPU-Z mis-identify the GPU.

What driver version are you using? And if not an HD5450, then what is it supposed to show? What clock speeds, default and OC?

Hi 7im,

I don't know the answer to any of your questions. The reason I think it's an HD5450 is because that's what both GPU-Z and the FaH client report.

How can I get the answers to your questions? What's "OC"? If it's over-clocked, then, no, nothing is over-clocked.

You may want to uninstall your current drivers and install the last known usable for windows XP (11-12_xp32_dd_ccc_ocl.exe)

Dunno if this is proper but I searched and could only find this thread re: Radeon 5450. I too am running a Radeon HD 5450. I just installed it today and noted that the client fails after a few minutes.

I'm running Windows 7 X64 with the latest Radeon 5450 drivers: AMD Version 9.2.0.0, dated 27/09/2012 installed using 12-10_vista_win7_win8_64_dd_ccc_whql_net4.exe No problems are reported via Device Manager and the adapter displays graphics just fine. Anything else that could be of use to ID the problem?

I infer that means video RAM problem; you may want to run VMT (Video Memory Test). (and memtest86+ first to be certain main RAM is fine)
If that passes, try Unigene Heaven (unless someone can suggest a video RAM tester that puts the GPU at 3D clocks whilst testing).

A number of persons have reported problems doing F@H using the 12.10 drivers. 12.8 is known to work. One user has reported a workaround has been posted at overclock.net for using the 12.10 drivers, forum post, but that may have its own issues. I would recommend 12.8 over using parts of two different installs.

The OpenMM folks at Stanford did a study on GPU memory and created memtestCL. Like the original memtest86, it's a bit clunky (runs from the "DOS box") but it seems to work through the OpenCL interface.

Sidebar: Would it be possible to make memtestG80/CL run at 3D performance clocks? Currently memtestG80 only tests my video RAM at 2D/desktop speeds (300MHz vs. 1080 and 324 vs. 2037)

Possible? Yes. Likely? No.

Nobody at Stanford is going to update memtestCL. They MIGHT accept an open-source submitted version or you can just publish it yourself as a 3rd party tool (after removing the part about submitting your results, since they've finished their study).

IMO, it's a waste of time to try to get a low-end AMD GPU Folding. IF you get it to run, the slowdown of your SMP WU will likely offset any points you get.

I tried on my 7750, but gave up. I previously Folded on several low-end ATI GPUs, including a 3850 and 4670. I don't want the endless trial & error of Catalyst releases and other conflicts any more...

Support for the 3000 and 4000 series was withdrawn by ATI some time back and Stanford can't be expected to support them if ATI doesn't. OpenCL supported devices require V7.

You're very likely right for the 5000 series and perhaps the 6000 series, and it looks like AMD current drivers have a problem with the 7000 series. See Joe_H's post above for some work-arounds.

I understand about the 3000 and 4000 series. I abandoned them before Pande Group did, for the stated reasons.

IIRC, I started on an X1950, and bought that card specifically to try Folding on it...

You can run GPU-Z's render test to put the card in 3D mode and run memtestG80/CL concurrently. Test about 200MB less than what your GPU has total.
