Just what speed is your aDSL provider giving you? I used to transfer compressed files over a 33.6kbps dial-up modem at the rate of 11 MB an hour. The slowest DSL uplink rate around here is 256 kbps, 768 kbps is more common. 256 kbps would transfer your 13 MB upload in 9-10 minutes.

Nominally, I'm getting a 1Mbps upload (good for UK ADSL, though things are improving). But on top of that there is contention with other users on the local loop, and I suspect some congestion further up. As you say, the raw sums do not indicate a problem, but in practice I have seen this sort of behaviour before -- there is a clear pattern of uploads aborting after a consistent period, which turns out to be the server timeout. There may be some other problem with an IP packet setting somewhere along the route, but there have been no suggestions which have made a difference so far. It may be significant that (AFAICT, and the evidence is elusive since the experiment is not repeatable) when the ADSL upload speed was doubled last year, upload times were nowhere near halved.
