Soon after projects 7000 - 7028 in full announcement, I had somewhat questionable privilege of receiving a 7012 WU. Downside is, I can't complete it within the 4-day preferred deadline, current prediction is 4.99 days for the uniprocessor slot. Is it possible to convert it to an SMP WU mid-run?

EDIT: No can do. I will revert from SMP back to an uniproc slot, dumping the SMP WU right away. Will also set <max-packet-size v='normal'/> for the uniproc slot, <max-packet-size v='big'/> for the GPU3 slot.

Another problem is, with the two currently running WUs (7012 uniproc & 10957 GPU3), I'm already running at 50% CPU utilization. Project 10957 is extremely CPU-hungry on my setup, with the 1.6GHz -> 2.1GHz overclock, it is only barely possible to keep the GPU fully utilized - 68xx GPU3 projects are much less CPU-intensive. Therefore, I'd need to contain the 7012 to only two threads (one physical core) for the time being, since I don't want to hurt the relatively high-PPD (about 8k PPD for lowly GT430 for project 10957) performance.

Obviously, babysitting of slot type (uniproc vs SMP) and/or FahCore_a4 & FahCore_15 affinities would be only a temporary solution for this particular 7012 WU anyway. I hope I can avoid A4/A6 WUs by changing <max-packet-size v='big'/> to 'normal' or even 'small' if necessary?

SMP + GPU3 isn't an option either. Even with the overclock to 2.1GHz, the CPU would be only barely able to complete conventional SMP WUs within preferred deadline. And they would have run completely dedicated, even concurrent GPU3 slot with 68xx projects would push SMP WUs past preferred deadline.

Playing with all the max-packet size configurations I could think of didn't help, still kept getting projects 7000-7028. Removed the uniproc slot for the time being. Just like I've removed the ION GPU2 slot "for the time being" because of ticket #661. At this rate, shouldn't take long until the GPU3 slot gets unusable, too. :roll:

I got around the multicore problem by reverting to the 6.34 client. You download a unit in uni mode, then restart it in multi mode before any processing is started.

Thanks for the tip. However, I have a few issues with it:
  1. I'd rather stick with v7. After all, that's where FAH is headed "soon"
  2. That method still requires a lot of manual labour, so to speak
  3. Atom 330 is a slow CPU, and my setup is not dedicated to folding anyway. Thus, despite having 2C/4T, it isn't suitable for SMP'ish work. My GT430 GPU is the only part dedicated to FAH - I'm using the built-in ION for display, and FahCore_15.exe is configured to High priority (using Process Lasso)

hints that I might try juggling slot types in v7 to achieve the same thing you do with v6.34. Alas, that wouldn't be a real solution either, points 2 and three would still apply.

One might ask, why do I even bother with the CPU slot (or trying to fold on ION)? Uniproc PPD is microscopic, ION PPD isn't much better (for those WUs that run successfully on it). Here's some reasoning:
  1. Just because I wish I could. I'd like to be as productive a folder as I can, provided that FAH doesn't interfere with my other activities (too much)
  2. I've been assured that PG is not sending out "busy work", that all contributions actually serve some scientific purpose. I take that statement at face value - for now
  3. I believe most folders still are part-timers or "semi-dedicated" like me. Not particularly competitive points wise, but fairly devoted. Therefore, I believe the problems I'm seeing will show up on (much) more powerful setups of other part-timers. That might alienate quite a bunch of people from folding altogether
So I guess I'm going to complain every now and then until I get either
  1. much smarter WU assignment logic or
  2. told to shut up and retire my underpowered CPU from folding altogether just because it is occasionally disrupting WU assignment logic and delaying the latest and greatest projects
If the generic solution turns out to be number two, you can guess just how much incentive your average person has to return to folding later on, with a more powerful setup... :|

I do understand where you're coming from. A large percentage of folks who join this forum and/or participate in a team forum are here to find ways to increase their PPD. They generally consider the Uniprocessor client beneath their dignity yet are quick to gripe when the lose a few PPD.

By far the biggest percentage of folders do NOT participate in the forums. It's reasonable to assume many (most?) of them are part-time-folders, like yourself. Just because they're under-represented on the forum doesn't mean that the Pande Group or this forum are uninterested in their participation. We just don't have any way to reach them.

Personally, I'm concerned about them and how the changes to the uniprocessor deadlines affect their participation. Every bit of science that's completed before the Preferred Deadline is a useful donation.
