lost WU

Post by midnytwarrior »

Hi! is there a possibility that 2 finished WU uploaded together at the same time be considered as 1? The first WU finished at slot#4 while the 2nd WU finished at slot #5 was uploaded leaving slot #4 on queue. After WU on slot # 6 finished, and uploaded, the info on slot # 4 said that it was also uploaded (empty/deleted) knowing that the WU in slot #4 was uploaded along with the WU at slot #6 but when I checked my stats, a WU was missing. Is there any way to get a "score" or "point" on this one, or shall we put "a hard days work unit" out of the counting?

Re: lost WU

Post by susato »

Hello midnytwarrior,

I checked in the CPU database which shows the last WU returned from each of a donor's machines. It only shows PS3 units for you. Your GPU units don't seem to be getting through at all.

Your log has a lot of statements of the type

[02:49:01] Could not transmit unit 06 to Collection server; keeping in queue.

and

[22:26:39] - Error: Could not transmit unit 04 (completed July 7) to work server.
[22:26:39] - Read packet limit of 540015616... Set to 524286976.

I suggest that you try posting this issue in the GPU folding subforum for NVidia or ATI issues depending on what card you are using. That's where the experts are. Since the problem seems to happen repeatedly, it's probably not a question of bad work units, but a software setting or networking problem.

Sir, did you mean by PS3 as in Play Station 3? I'm sorry but I don't have any PS3 consoles here. Nor I'm planning to use one.
For now, I'm using 2 machines, 1st is a Q9650 coupled with an ATI 3870X2, and the other one is a Q6600 and an ATI 4670.
As i was not having problems with my GPU, or my network but the way the WU just disappeared entirely.
If it was about bad units, maybe a WU error could have been reported, OS or software settings are the same which I had been using day after day, WU after WU for both of my machines. Network is also very much the same the way I had been using the net and sending and downloading WU every time.
So now we are talking about a lost WU. If so,please kindly advise me to open this topic in another subforum where you may find it suitable.
Thank you

Sorry for the misunderstanding. The "User's Last WU" database characterized your equipment as PS3 rather than GPU, which is why I responded as I did. Thanks for clarifying.

Here's the portion of your FAHlog which describes the fate of your missing WU.
[06:15:27] Loaded queue successfully.
[06:15:27] Initialization complete
[06:15:27] Unit 4's deadline (July 9 05:00) has passed.
[06:15:39]
[06:15:39] + Processing work unit
[06:15:39] Project: 5741 (Run 4, Clone 77, Gen 280)
[06:15:39] - Read packet limit of 540015616... Set to 524286976.

[06:15:39] + Attempting to send results [July 9 06:15:39 UTC]
Unfortunately, by the time that work unit was sent back to Stanford, it had passed its final deadline and was no longer eligible for points. The problem was probably associated with server downtime: if you look in the server log of the 171.64.65.102 server assigning p5735 WU's, it was in reject mode for part of July 7 and the collection server was very busy during that time, accounting for the multiple upload failures.

I"m sorry that you'll have to write off that WU at least in terms of the points. It can still be valuable to the science if it failed to complete, or went over deadline, on its subsequent assignment.

what's the purpose of this http://fah-web.stanford.edu/serverstat.html anyway? if in your "server log" says that it wasn't accepting and the server stats say they are?

sorry? -that's it?

well at least you could have counted in the WU even without the points. since they'll still be of some use for the "science".

or maybe you could bring in more "science" to keep your servers up

The purpost of the Server Status page is to help Contributors to the project help themselves. If I have a work unit that isn't uploading to 171.65.103.158, then I can go check that page, and see that server is currently down.

But please note, that server status page is not live data. It's a snap shot of the data taken every 15 minutes, and a lot can change in that amount of time.

I viewed the page not only once or twice when trying to upload the WU. Plus, the WU on slot # 5 was collected by the same server as the WU on slot #4 and just entirely left WU on #4

while accepting WU in #5

Please note susato's comment above. WU in slot #4 expired before it could be uploaded. Once expired, there is no benefit to uploading.

Is there something we could do or could be done to avoid this things? Honestly, it's kind of frustrating to see one's hard work or "hard earned" work becomes non beneficial?

I understand your frustration.

This isn't something that comes up very often. The portions of the process that are under your control are things that happen from the moment that a WU is downloaded until processing is complete and how that compares to the deadlines for the projects that you process. The portions of the process that are not under your control are those issues associated with server down-time.

If you have slow hardware or you only fold a limited number of hours per day, you can decide whether there's something that needs to be changed. If the server is down, the Pande Group will attempt to get the server back on-line as soon as possible. There is redundancy built into the process since generally speaking any WU can be uploaded to either the Work Server or the Collection Server and (presuming that nothing is blocking the upload on your system) that both attempts are made at least every 6 hours.

Running an advanced client (GPU or SMP) rather than the CPU client does expose you to added risks including short deadlines. That's one reason those clients earn higher points. The CPU client has much, much longer deadlines and I believe I can guarantee that those people who choose to run the CPU client a reasonable number of hours per week on any relatively modern computer will never miss a deadline. Only you can choose which client(s) best fit your style.

With some people, there is no difference. ;) With some, they are very intertwined, as the server runs in the bedroom, and is too loud for a person to sleep, the contributor and computer must sleep at the same time. With some, it's a very loose interaction. Might be the cost of running the server 24/7 is too expensive to maintain your current lifestyle.

Any way you cut it, the server needs to run enough hours per day to complete a work unit before the deadline. If that is not possible for a client with short deadlines (GPU or SMP) then a client like the CPU client, which has more relaxed deadlines would better fit yours or your computing style. ;)

as I see it, whether I get relaxed or long deadline, if the WU is not collected after deadline date then it's just as you would call it - junk

The relaxed deadlines of the CPU client are in the order of months, not minutes as with the GPU client, and folding part time. If the servers are down for a few days with GPU, you could easily miss a deadline. If the same thing happens with CPU client, you still have several weeks to spare. That's a big difference.
