Hi rahein - Welcome to the forum and thanks for posting. What you've seen here is the assignment server making sure you have work for your Mac Pro even when the regular server for it was unresponsive.

Here's what happened: your Mac Pro, with either 4 or 8 cores Folding, was identified as a quad-plus machine by the assignment server (the "queue loaded successfully" line which directed it to get a work unit from work server 171.64.65.63 (which provisions mainly quad and higher-plex Linux and OSX folding rigs). However, this server was either down or busy and did not respond. After several unsuccessful tries, the AS caught on that you were not getting anywhere with the original server, so it sent you to server 171.64.65.56 (which serves mostly OSX and Linux dual core SMP folding rigs) where you picked up a work unit- presumably a small work unit best suited for a duallie. The AS wants to keep all donors supplied with work so when the original work server is unreachable it goes through a flowchart of alternatives to find the most suitable work unit for you and assign it to you.

I looked at the server logs and found a net load of 200 (very high) on that server at the time you were trying to reach it.

Your machine should go back to the 171.64.65.63 or 171.67.108.24 server after finishing the current WU.

Thanks for Folding - I hope to read more of your posts here on the forum.

In Activity Monitor it looks like I've got two FaH 6 processes running, taking up 0% of CPU.

You're right - something is wrong. The only work unit listed as completed by rahein was back on January 29.

You appear to have two different Folding clients running, one with process ID 1257, the other with process ID 49. Do they show up in the System Preferences panel as two different icons? When you configured them, did you place them in different folders or assign different machine ID's? When two instances have the same machine ID, or when they try to operate on the same work folder, the interference can crash the work units, forcing them to start over.

I suggest that you kill both processes from Activity Monitor and then start up one of them only, and see what happens.

Is your Mac Pro a quad core or a dual quad core? If a quad core, then there is no need to run two instances of Folding.
If it's a dual quad, maxing out your CPU will require two instances, and I think you will need to run at least one of those instances from the Console.

Thanks. I turned off the Folding in the one pref pane installed, then I killed, killed again, and they kept on coming!

Restarted, and I appear to be running one process, Gromacs, on four instances of FahCOre_a2.exe

IF you can check to see that I'm "online", then I can let the machine idle in peace...

Thank you!

There isn't any way to check if you're online; only you can do that.

The FAH client contacts the servers to get an initial work assignment (WU) and the software to process it (FahCore_xx.exe). Then there is no communications until the WU is finished. From the server's perspective, it can't tell whether you're processing something or you've shut down your machine. (Well, that's not 100% true. I will eventually know the total time between downloading the WU and uploading the results.)

That server was down for some time last night, coming back up between 2 and 3 am EST. It seems to be rather busy (CPU load) now.
The thing to do in a case like this is to check the server stats page and to post any apparent problems with the server to the "Issues with a specific server" section of the forum, where you will find threads for each of the servers.

To force upload of a completed unit, and/or a download of new work, you might try stopping and restarting the client, because the first thing the client does when restarted is to try to contact Stanford. One caveat when doing so is that the FahCore processes sometimes take as long as 3-5 minutes to terminate after you stop the client. So it's only safe to restart right after stopping, when that client isn't folding anything. If you look in the thread on 171.64.65.56 in the server issues sub-forum, you'll see the discussion from last night... and the work unit I (oops) trashed by mistake by not following my own advice.

I think there is a thread about this server already... http://foldingforum.org/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=7884

And another thread about the connection errors here: http://foldingforum.org/viewtopic.php?f ... 0&start=15

Edited by susato, 5 Mar 2009 to change 2nd URL after "another thread about the connection errors" was merged into
this thread.

Click on those two URLs in your browser. I get a page containing "OK" from both of them.

If you do get the OK, your connection is good and something local (such as security software) must be blocking the connection.
If you do NOT get the OK, it's probably your connection, although one server might be down. [I don't remember the last time either of them was down.]

When I click on the links, niothing appears and after 45 seconds the window closes and a file is downloaded, not displayed with the contents "OK".

Re: Can't connect to 171.67.108.25 & assign2.stanford.edu

Sorry, I could find no problem other than my own post about connecting to assign2 and another server at the same time.

Thanks for referring me back to myself.

This is frustrating. There are errors. They need to get fixed. No one is fixing them. I can't do it from my end.

It's great to have a distributed project, but it is hard to get involved when the system doesn't work and hardware that could be helping is better switched off because it is doing just as much work for the project while shut down and saving energy in the process.

Off to post the same info for the third time....maybe a solution will arise - it's another 16 hours of console report filled with "Could not ../send http request, connect. retrying, could not send, could not connect." Guess I should just shut down the client, wait a week, and see if anything has changed.
