Switching program Series

I have one computer that I cannot watch all of the time. It is running the old 5.03 series. I have been trying to catch it in between WUs to to upgrade the program to 6.23.

The question that I have is:

Can I just shut the old program down, back up all the data there, install the new program, copy the data over and not lose anything?

If you use the -oneunit flag, it will finish the WU and stop. Then you can update with no worries.

If you have the GUI version, then it is even simpler. Right click on the icon in the system tray and there should be somewhere the option to pause when done.

Also, I am really getting started or is "HOOKED" a better word on getting a good setup. This one computer is not a topper but not an anchor either (AMD Sempron 3000, XP Pro SP3, 9200 Ati Radeon with 128 megs of memory, Asus A7V8X LA MB and 2 gig of Corsair PC3200 memory).

I know the MB is old and I cannot tweak it much. The bios is limited. Without spending a bunch of bucks on it, give me some suggestions at how to make it a killer for FAH

Microsoft programming standards have existed for a long time but most people ignored them in WinXP. When Vista started to enforce them, the installer was redesigned to follow both the Vista and the XP standards (which happen to be different).

Thanks bruce. That is what I thought it was. I noticed it installed that way on my Vista box.

i dont see the harm in not upgrading it all. i still run a 766 with the old version and my other 3 are 6.23.

There is no harm in staying with older "supported" versions of the client. But there is no benefit either. New clients typically have feature improvements. For example, v6.23 has better error handling, and your client can often get partial credit for work units that ended in an EUE, while previous versions of the client may not see that same benefit, or may not see that benefit as often as with the newer client.

I don't have data on that difference, but why not take advantage, even if a small one? Of course, upgrading to a v6 client is not an option for some older operating systems, or if you have special proxy needs.

That and 6.23 has some new features for controlling cores that 5.04 doesn't have, that means some cores won't work properly in future without it (lock to specific CPU, downloading sidecar files with cores [FahCore_a0 uses this already]).

Show me where it says that.

It's not the age of the computer, it's the age of the Operating System. If you're running Windows 98 or ME, you can't upgrade, but many "older" computers have upgraded Windows XP.

Windows XP/2003/Vista = System tray client installer with viewer 6.23

We have kept a few older clients available for download in order to handle older machines or Operating Systems. We do not recommend these clients for more recent computers. Please go to our older client download page for older clients and more information.

Windows 2000/XP/Vista = Graphical client 5.03
Windows 98/ME Graphical client (not recommended for Windows 2000, XP, or Vista) = 4.00
Windows NT/2000/XP/Vista = Text-only console (with Windows-service-install option) 5.04

both are for XP and vista, and im assuming both for 2000 since im unaware of a windows 2003 but even if im wrong aobut that part then still 5.03 and 5.04 are xp/vista client for older machines and 4.00 is for older operating systems. and the main download page says it carries clients for older machines AND older operating systems.

if i will get better output on my 766 with 256mb with XP whic, like you said, i upgraded from ME, then ill gladly switch over when i get it out of storage, but right now im just following the instructions on the download page.

The older clients are only left up there for computers which do not run one of the operating systems supported by the new clients (so 4.00 for 98/ME, 5.03 for W2000, 5.04 for W2000 and NT). The old clients do work on the newer OSes (except v4) but if you have a newer OS I think the Pande Group would rather that you upgrade, so that you can use the new features. The clients are basically only file managers for the WUs, it's the cores that do the work, and those are the same for all client versions (excepting FahCore_a0 which uses that new ability to download sidecar files). The "old" download page is somewhat misleading in this respect.

And "Windows 2003" refers to Windows Server 2003
