Lots of things that aren't working, new install

I downloaded and installed the latest version of the F@H for WinXP yesterday and created a new team as well. Here are my problems:

- The Display window, while using any of the views that show information, doesn't show anything for Donor Name or team, Performance or time left, and shows "0/0" for progress.

- Right-clicking the F@H icon in the tray and then clicking on any of the alternatives under the Status list that connects to a website freezes the application.

- Shutting the application down resets all configuration settings and restarts on a new fold.

- My Team page doesn't exist.

Am i the only one as usual or is this rather important application filled with bugs?

That looks fine ... although the frequent checkpoints is usually a bad idea : it increase the risk of exiting the client while a checkpoint is written, which corrupt it and loose progress.

What is you CPU ? Is there something else using CPU time ?

Hmm, then maybe that's what happened. But that was what i thought i was avoiding by using a low checkpoint. If the application needs to save the progress before You shut it down, and if it resets everything if You shut it down while it is saving... wow.. six years in the making, and this is where we're at? =/

I've noticed that F@H doesn't do much if it's set to the lowest process priority, so i raised it to the higher option and set the processor usage slider to ~40%, which by then it got up to 40/10,000 processes quite quickly.

Don't mix core priority setting and CPU usage requested setting. That's not the same.

Core priority set how the client will handle interaction with other applications (it usually doesn't have to be changed unless in some particular cases).

CPU usage requested has to be 100%, unless you having stability issues with the machine. But you usually don't ...

Would be quite helpful if it was more obvious that You need to read a guide for the application to work, preferably at the same page as You download it. Fascinating how they leave options that destroy the entire configuration data left in the application.

Why would i want the application to run at 100% processor usage? That makes the fans spin like crazy and gives us a noisy environment. The developers are, by not fixing the bugs that apparently appear when using less than 100% processor power, lowering the standard of living for hundreds of thousands of people.

FAH is specifically designed to use "unused computer resources" which means all except what you use for something else. An option is provided so that if you don't want to do that, you can change it.

There's a reason that some of the options are called "Advanced" It means the defaults should work for you and if you intend to change them, you should understand what the various guides say about them.

I am still unable to look at the "Display" while running either/both the latest CPU and GPU clients. The result is an immediate processor HALT and reboot. (Core-2-Quad WinXP-SP3 with EVGA GeForce 9500 GT on G96 GPU ForeceWare 190.38). I need to stop trying this! Is there any hope for a functional {Display} call? Strangely, the Display function works perfectly - days on end - on my Win 98SE client, but this is not exactly accelerating the project, is it.

The V6 Viewer (Display) function has been widely reported as having problems and the normal recommendation is "don't use it"

There's reason to suspect that it works with some video drivers and not with others rather than the actual code being at fault. Have you tried other driver versions from the NVidia download site?

Note: The Viewer included with the Systray client is not yet working properly and is a known bug. This is the Display option when you right click the FAH tray icon. The Pande Group is aware of these issues and is working to fix them. Sometimes the viewer works, sometimes not. And it always uses a lot of CPU power, and may slow down the folding client. In the mean time, avoid using the viewer. The viewer is not required to make the client run.

After I downloaded and installed the 6.23 Systray client, I spent an hour playing with every setting to try and kill the client, including rebooting several times with the client running.

The only thing I did not use was the viewer.

Nothing I did broke the client, and everything worked as it should.

Tried that too. Used several settings between 30 and 100 percent.

Again, with the exception of the viewer, everything worked as it should.

No. Just the viewer.

I would recommend trying to run the client without the viewer. If it works then you know it was just the viewer.

If any of the problems persist after eliminating the viewer, then further troubleshooting is required.
