Mining rigs put to good use Good then bad

Post by trkr75 »

Good afternoon,

Not sure what is going on, but recently I noticed my Crypto miners that I switched over to Folding@Home went from running great to under performing by a lot. For a few months I was getting almost 400million a month now last month I was at like 80 million. I even have a RTX 4090 and it is only pulling in around 10million a day. Really not sure what is going on. Drivers are all up to date and I am running F@H ver. 7.6.21 according to the web interface "SLOT PROJECT PERFORMANCE 69.46% BELOW AVERAGE" Any thoughts or suggestions of settings I should check?

Regards,
Ken

Loads of questions here beyond drivers....

How many GPU's are you using? What specs?

Are all GPU's getting work units, and if so what is the average PPD of each card?

What type of system(s) are they running in?

More information is always better. Though some variation in performance is normal, long term variations of several hundred percent are not.

What are you using for input on your PPD averages? The reason I ask is due to the numbers being low across several systems, and indicative that something might simply be using the incorrect metric for the calculation.

Seeing that all rigs use the Timer and Auto Finish Support, I'm wondering if maybe you are only folding at night, yet your PPD is being calculated as if you are running 24/7? Though I didn't look at them all, it seems your GPU's are returning about 1/3 of the expected PPD. If you only fold somewhere around 8 hours a night this is expected, but how it's calculated can tell different stories.

Are you using HFM or another program to monitor actual throughput and returns per work unit?

I'm not familiar with the metrics the LAR Systems use to report PPD returns and such, as I haven't used the extension. But it seems to me somehow you might be seeing the actual 24 hour average on your GPU throughput, but not folding on them 24 hours a day. As such a 1 million PPD GPU that runs 8 hours a day is still a 1 million PPD GPU. But if that GPU is only actually run for 8 hours a day then the actual points for that 8 hour period would be 333,3333, not 1 million.

I did check the timers and that seemed to be part of the issue so I turned them off so it should be folding 24/7, I may have a PSU issue as they seem to be rebooting randomly through out the day. I have a tester and new PSU on the way so I can rule that out as well. As far as "What are you using for input on your PPD averages?" I am not sure what you mean. I just took the information form the LAR System page. I have never used HFM before just going by https://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/ for my stats and now the LAR Systems extension.

The mix of projects is always changing, and with wide GPUs like RTX 4090, it is very prone to huge variations in PPD ...

Also, make sure that you don't get GPU driver resets which might leave your GPUs into conservative clocks until you reboot the system.

The question regarding PPD was what you are basing your PPD return on, but pointing out that if only part of a day you can't expect that PPD to reflect an entire day.

As for the power supply issues, how often are things rebooting? Every time that happens your system has to start at the last checkpoint at best, and might lose work units at worst. If this is happening a number of times a day you are doing duplicate work at times, and losing work units at other times. In either case something you should sort out before folding.

MOBO -Gigabyte Z390
CPU -Intel I5 94000f
No riser installed on the MOBO
RAM -32GB
M.2 -2TB
SSD -2TB X2
PSU -850watt have a 1000 on the way for another build but could swap it in if that may be the problem.
GPU -RTX 4090 ZOTAC

On a side note, I see your a HAM as well. KJ4OQW here

Very odd indeed. When your label said mining rigs, the riser cables were the forst thing that i thought of. But I assumed...so... :)

Check your folding number here: https://apps.foldingathome.org/bonus

looks like maybe you are getting failed WU's possibly so you aren't getting a bonus?

I use the Lars extension and the timers in it and neverf had a problem.
