How can I alert Stanford that a WU isn't coming back?
Every once in a while I run into a problem where the deadline has not passed yet, but I know that my computer will not be able to complete the WU before the deadline. Sometimes this is because I'll unexpectedly have to go somewhere with my laptop where I cannot access a power outlet for an extended period of time. Recently, this has also occurred with the GPU2 client because I've been having issues with the client that have reduced its performance and my computer's available hours to run it.
Anyway, I would like to help Stanford in these cases by simply telling them that my computer can't get it done so they can immediately assign it to somebody else. However, I can't seem to find a way to do this. The word "qfix" keeps coming to mind, but I looked it up and I don't think that's what I want.
Is there a way to do this? It's not a problem on my end, but I'd like to give the Stanford servers a quicker heads-up, rather than simply letting the WU expire.

If your talking about the final deadline it doesn't really matter. the WU was already issued to another person when you didn't make the preferred deadline.
Re: How can I alert Stanford that a WU isn't coming back?
Well, in this specific case it is also before the preferred deadline. I've had both happen before.

If someone submits a WU that you have been working on, it should automatically stop and work on an other one.
There should also be something that notifies the user that this has happened maybe... 5 times in a row?
Just a suggestion.

If you don't have another PC or another friend that can fold it for you, just let it expire. Not much else you can do unless someone volunteers to finish the WU for you. Of course, they may want the points too.

Interesting idea, but there is no communications between the client and Stanford except at the beginning/end of a WU. Even if the servers were programmed to notify you, the client is not designed to listen for unsolicited messages. (They would be blocked by most firewalls, anyway.)SolidSteel144 wrote:If someone submits a WU that you have been working on, it should automatically stop and work on an other one.

Re: How can I alert Stanford that a WU isn't coming back?
I have a vaguely similar situation....I have spent the time, while the GPU server was down, setting up SMP on my folder that is running now together with GPU back online. As a result I have 2 unfinished WUs on that machine.
I have my original Duron 1100 (with which I started with a few weeks back) in another room and would like to transfer said WUs to that once it has finished its own work. Doing so will be better for the science because I can complete the WU's on time and it will allow me to collect the points for the team.
So....How do I do this? is it just a matter of moving the whole "folding2" folder? or should I only move specific files? and the second question... if only files is it ok moving from console to graphic?

Moving files from one machine to another is possible, but there are a number of issues. The WIKI has some discussion about the issues under the topic of "sneakernetting" although that article is aimed at a permanent method of migrating WUs back and forth and you're just intending to do it once.
A) Restart the receiving machine (the Duron 1100) with -oneunit so that it finishes the current WU but does not download a new one. Confirm that there is nothing that still needs to be uploaded.
B) Verify that the unfinished WUs can be completed within their deadlines.
C) Move queue.dat and the entire WORK directory to the receiving machine and start the client.
D) Do NOT attempt to get new work on that client of the sending machine at least until the work assigned to it has been uploaded.

I don't think you can move gpu to/from cpu work units.grumpydaddy wrote:So....How do I do this? is it just a matter of moving the whole "folding2" folder? or should I only move specific files? and the second question... if only files is it ok moving from console to graphic?

A WU for a GPU can only be moved to a machine running a supported GPU of the same brand.typo wrote:I don't think you can move gpu to/from cpu work units.grumpydaddy wrote:So....How do I do this? is it just a matter of moving the whole "folding2" folder? or should I only move specific files? and the second question... if only files is it ok moving from console to graphic?
