Good morning,
Is there an option to restrict the size / duration of tasks which are assigned to a CPU or GPU?
The reason for asking this is, that my notebook in the last two weeks always gets jobs to do which are beyound its capabilities. If the estimated net time is in the range of 2 days, the tasks will never be completed because is cannot be completed within the time limit. (Especially since the computer cannot run 24/7 either). So all the energy consumption, noise, computing capabilities are wasted. It is very disappointing to see the progress reaching e.g. 70% and then the job is cancelled and the next too big WU is started with 0,0%. Letting the notebook work on smallers task would be much more efficient.
Best regards and stay healthy
Martin
How can the size of assigned tasks can be restricted.

Re: How can the size of assigned tasks can be restricted.
Unfortunately, there is no direct way to set the max processing time of the work unit. There is an option for preferring small size of downloaded work, so you might try that and see if it correlates. Under Expert options tab, in the Extra client options add : "max-packet-size" and set its value to "small". This was made to accomodate dial-up users, so it's doubtful that it will help you complete work on time.
Can you post the first 200 or so lines of your log so we can see what hardware and OS you're running?

Perhaps there are ways to tune your processing, e.g. by processing on GPU only, which is usually better for thermally limited notebooks with discrete graphics. Especially for CPUs without AVX, you might be better off not folding on the CPU of a notebook. If that doesn't help either, perhaps doing a BOINC project might be better, since BOINC projects are less time sensitive than Folding@Home.

Re: How can the size of assigned tasks can be restricted.
This gets advised a lot lately. Can anyone from the FAH team officially say if this setting is still used by the researchers making the projects? This was created for folders with dial-up modems way back.gunnarre wrote:Unfortunately, there is no direct way to set the max processing time of the work unit. Re: How can the size of assigned tasks can be restricted.
According to the statistics on lar.folding.systems, it looks like the MX130 GPU in your notebook PC is hit-or-miss at making the timeout even when it's running 24/7. Try folding only on the GPU (pause the CPU slot) and see if that helps. If, not pause the GPU and leave it paused.
In case the GPU gives bad results even alone, the good news is that your CPU has AVX support, so it might actually be more successful at making the timeouts than your GPU. If it struggles with 10 threads, you might try reducing it to folding on 8 CPU threads.

Re: How can the size of assigned tasks can be restricted.
Right, this looks like another of my heavy posts, sorry dear reader.
If you're going to fold with low power kit you'll need to take a critical look at your kit and consider if it's the right thing to do.
I would recommend, if you can, running your system for a solid week and then pick apart the logs. I would also monitor it with the likes cpu-z HWMonitor, MSI Afterburner (yes, I know it's an overclocking tool but it can underclock your system and produce logs of your component's speeds and temperatures).
Determine what you're system is actually capable of. Your system will be capable of meeting deadlines, it's just a question of under what circumstances.
You could look to a different part-time strategy like 2 days a week (48 continuous hours) instead of 8 hours a day (56 broken hours). FAH benefits most from actually letting your computer finish work and return the results.
FAH assign work units with the expectation that your hardware is capable enough to complete and return the work, before it times out, and is running 24/7.
The timeout is a trigger to reassign your work unit to another folder/donor to ensure science continues. If benefits nobody if you're continuously hitting timeout as you've wasted your computer resources on it, you're forcing your task to be carried out by someone else using resources that could've been to progress other science and you're overall slowing the pace of science.
FAH have already tried to alleviate a certain amount of this for gpus with their "gpu.txt" database. It basically pigeonholes your gpu into a capability/performance category (they call it species). Testing of the work units themselves identifies suitable and unsuitable gpus for running the work units which creates restrictions on who actually receives which work units. The FAH servers then play matchmaker to give you work units suitable for your gpu. Over time the new gpus are added and older gpus are black listed (they're still listed but have been identified as unsuitable to receive work).
Work for cpus is a little different. There is no "cpu.txt" file. FAH primarily check core count/thread for issues and place restrictions accordingly. It is the job of the donor to keep an eye on their system and "retire" cpus which can longer meet the timeout.
"max-packet-size" and set its value to "small" - I see this getting aired every so often. I don't advise or recommend it. As has been previously said by other it's a carryover from the dial-up era ad was used to limit the size of the payload sent to donors. The little experience I have has shown that it plays little to no part in the processing required for a work unit.
