GPU Disabled

Post by rednumbers »

Hello, I am new to all of this and just started folding a day ago. I have completed a couple WU on 1 GPU, but the second GPU shows Disabled. In the client, under folding slots it shows the following. (couldn't figure how to post picture)

ID Status Description
00 Running cpu : 6
01 Running gpu : 1:0 GP107M [GeForce GTX 1050 Mobile]
02 Disabled gpu : 0:2 CFL GT2 [UHD Graphics 630]

I cant find any way to enable the second GPU. I really am completely lost here, if someone could guide me how to give more information about my problem or figure out what I am doing wrong it would be greatly appreciated.

The second GPU [UHD Graphics 630] is the cpu intergrated iGPU. It is very underwhelming and gets disabled by default when the dedicated GPU i.e. [GeForce GTX 1050 Mobile] is being used. There is no need for the second gpu to be working! So you are set! But, since you are folding on a laptop, try to keep an eye on your temps, since they are prone to overheating.

Ahh ok great, thank you and yes my laptop is heating up as high as 97c at sometimes. Gonna do what I can to fix that but may have to use a different system.

If you are comfortable with undervolting, setting PWR targets etc, you could try that. The easiest solution would be to turn the laptop in tent mode [ /\ ] so it can have unrestricted access to fresh air (assuming the intake is on the bottom). Even better, take the bottom cover off + the battery(its gonna be plugged to the wall anyway, you may as well save some wear and tear). None the less, at 97c you are losing performance due to thermal throttling, so you must address the issue.

Its a laptop - what performance is there to lose? ;) ... Actually seriously you might want to try just GPU folding on the laptop for a while (run a few wus in that mode) and compare output/ppd to running with cpu ... Many people find that it actually is better just to run the gpu - the extra heat from the cpu means the gpu throttles and loses more points/throughput than the cpu slot gains.
