constant bad wu-s on my new laptop

Post by Jony »

Ive got my new laptop today, and thought it would be a good idea to fold on it for stress testing, but the issue im having is is that my 1660ti cannot complete a single wu
My best guess is that the integrated amd gpu somehow is interfering but im not an expert in computer stuff
so far ive just installed win10 ltsc and all of the updates and the latest nvidia driver (461.09) nothing else is on the computer
my laptop has an r7 4800H 16gb ram and a 1660ti

Is the 1660ti factory overclocked? .. Particle coordinate is NaN can indicate unstable clocks
What are your temperatures doing? .. Laptops running both CPU and GPU can have issues relating to this which could be making gpu unstable?

Post by Jony »

none of the above
the card runs at 80c only goes up to the spec 1590mhz and i tried with or without the cpu (80c is with the cpu)
in the meanwhile i installed the AMD graphics driver wich helped a bit (now it went to 9% before failing instead of 1%) but it still fails
ill let you know if the amd gpu fails too but thats gonna take about 12h to complete its wu

We need to see the first 200 lines of the log where FAH reports your detected hardware. Some of that information is repeated where you started your post, but that's not the top of the file... it's the start of a new assignment and it only describes what's acive. See below.

Re: constant bad wu-s on my new laptop

Post by BobWilliams757 »

From my understanding very few MB/BIOS combinations will allow the APU to run properly with a stand alone graphics card. I have a Ryzen 2400G and was looking to get a decent GPU to put into the system, but wanted to keep the APU functional. Many forums have people searching for answers on how to get both working at once, and the common answer seems to be that it is a rare thing. I'd personally try disabling the onboard in the BIOS if possible, then see if it will fold with the 1660. If it does, you may have the option of changing BIOS settings depending on which you want to use.

If that doesn't work or there is no option, you may be able to just delete the slot you don't want to run and see if the 1660 will fold if the APU isn't folding.
Fold them if you get them!

as stated in the subject, i have a laptop, not a normal pc and i sure hope they managed to make the apu work as the integrated display runs off of that :)

I also tried to play with underclocking my gpu to see it it would help and actually -100mhz offset on the memory seems to have helped a lot (it so far actually completed a wu and before the furthest i got was 9%) but i will let it run for a few days at least and see if i get any more bad wu-s
also the integrated gpu seems to do fine, its been running for 6 hours without any errors

The hardware requirements for FAH have very little to do with the hardware requirements to service a display. FAH requires the FP64 instruction set plus OpenCL 1.2+. (Many APUs do support both.) Neither of those are required if you're watching a video or displaying a desktop. FAH does not use the rasterization hardware ... except as an output device for the GUI software... with one exception: THe protein viewer requires OpenGL support.

(Note: OpenCL and OpenGL are different.)

That reply was meant for Bob williams who suggested i disable my igpu to get my "dedicated" gpu working with folding, but since its stupid to get a laptop to just do folding i thought i dont need to say that i wanna use the laptop as intended also, so that makes disabling the igpu a non option as that would result in me not being able to use my laptop and has nothing to do with folding

As for my original problem, i think i figured out whats happening, but have no perfect solution for it. It seems that if i leave all the setting stock in msi afterburner the card while cold just sometimes monentarily forget that its under a heavy load and jumps from the usual 1600mhz range up to 18-1900 mhz ( the highest ive seen is 1930mhz) after the card has heated up and is thermal throttling i can take off the negative offsets from msi afterburner and the card will run fine as long as it has work to do, but if it gets to cool down again the behaviur returns

Now the part i dont get is it doesent matter how much offset i give or if its a memory or gpu offset this behaviur stops. This workaround works but i would like the standard gpu boost to behave normally, is there a way to fix it? or should i contact asus support about it? i have a TUF a15 laptop if this info is helpful

Thanks for your help

If you disable the integrated graphics and always run the graphics off the discrete GPU, you can still use your laptop - it just uses more electricity than it would otherwise, right? But if you're always folding, that's not an issue. The inconvenience would be that if you're pausing folding you also have re-enable the integrated graphics to get the full power saving benefit.

Welcome to Folding@Home!

We are slightly hampered by not knowing the make and model of the laptop. Many laptops use a technology Nvidia calls Optimus, where the APU graphics are used until there is a need for more graphic 'horsepower' then it switches to the Nvidia card.
https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/te ... echnology/
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GPU_switching

This presents F@H with two problems:
1) only one GPU is active at a time, not both.
2) which one is active switches early as the Work Unit as the laptop notices that you need heavy duty graphics, crashing the WU.

As you may have already noticed, leaving MSI Afterburner open may force the Nvidia card to be active all the time, so you solve the crashing, and can fold so long as Afterburner is open on the Nvidia GPU.

While I have described one scenario, without knowing what you own, there is no way for us to know if you are using some form of GPU switching.

my laptop is a TUF FA506IU-HN174

Also the bad wu-s also happen if msi afterburner is open but no offset is given

what power mode are you using? ... performance is stock gpu speeds .. turbo is +100MHz gpu boost so if running turbo power then it is effectively overclocked - this might be why it struggles for stability with FaH and also why -100MHz seems to help?

if you have optimus (I do on my intel/nvidia laptop - not sure where it comes with amd/nvidia) then you should be able to set the FAH programs only to use the nvidia gpu leaving the other free for normal usage.

"During 2D use, AMD's Radeon Vega is responsible for video output, which improves the battery life due to the iGPU's lower energy consumption." - https://www.notebookcheck.net/Asus-TUF- ... 570.0.html

This implies my theory, only one GPU is active at any time.

I read over a dozen sites, it is not well documented online.

Quick skim of web indicates nvidia optimus can run with amd/nvidia combination - as to where it is installed on this laptop I have no clue but if it is it should allow for folding to be done on the nvidia card with system running on the amd iGPU
