Mac-Mini 7.6.21 and Intel GPU

Post by sejtam »

I read the announcement that the Intel GPU is now supported: viewtopic.php?f=24&t=36512

lshw(1) identifies the GPU as:
*-display
description: VGA compatible controller
product: 3rd Gen Core processor Graphics Controller
vendor: Intel Corporation
physical id: 2
bus info: pci@0000:00:02.0
version: 09
width: 64 bits
clock: 33MHz
capabilities: msi pm vga_controller bus_master cap_list rom
configuration: driver=i915 latency=0
resources: irq:53 memory:a0000000-a03fffff memory:90000000-9fffffff ioport:2000(size=64) memory:c0000-dffff

I take it that 'version: 09' corresponds to the Gen9 mentioned.

I also followed the install instructions in https://dgpu-docs.intel.com/installatio ... focal.html
as my mac is headless and I need teh GPU only for folding

So the GPU is seen but CUDA support is missing?

For the Intel iGPU to be used, OpenCL needs to be seen by the client. The message about CUDA support only applies to nVidia GPUs.

Looking up your CPU though reveals that it is too old. It is part of the Ivy Bridge family of processors, the HD 4000 it has is Gen7. You can look it up in this Wikipedia article - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_I ... sing_units.

I am not certain what the "version:09" refers to.

I share your disappointment. My laptop also has a Gen7 graphics processor. :(

Support for higher Intel Gen numbers is being extended upward. There's no assurance that it will be extended downward. Our iGP may be too slow for FAH or (more likely) the OpenCL driver package may have bugs that prevent it from consistently getting correct answers.
