Can't get my GPU to work

Post by matrix1999 »

Hi, sorry if this has been asked before.

I am new to Folding@home and I just installed the latest Windows client. Everything seems to be working fine, except that I couldn't get my GPU to work in conjunction with my CPU. I have a GTX 970 card and I see that it is listed in the GPU.txt. I even checked against GPU-Z and confined the ID matches to what's listed in the GPU.txt.

I opened the console, clicked on slots, add a new slot, selected GPU and left it as "-1". Click save but somehow the app won't recognize or add the GPU. Can anyone shed some light as to what I did wrong?

Thanks in advance!

Yes, it has been asked many times, but there are pretty wide differences in what might be wrong so we pretty much have to answer each one individually.

Is this WIndows, Linux, or MacOS-X? Which version?
Which version of FAHClient did you install?
Which GPU drivers are installed and where did you get them?
In FAHControl, go to Configure + Expert. Do you see GPU=FALSE?

Thank you so much for your prompt reply. Stupid me didn't search enough within the forum. I managed to come across several other similar posts. What I discovered was that things work once I rebooted my machine (by work I mean I can add the GPU as a new slot). So maybe it should advise users to reboot after installation completes.

I just upgraded to 7.6.x and yep, no GPU anymore available. Adding the slot does not work.

Hello, I have the same Problem. With the new Version 7.6.9 I can not add a GPU Slot. If I go to advanced Settings and and a GPU Slot it doesn´s work. After hitting the save button the GPU Slot is atomaticaly deleted. I have in my first PC a 1070 and in my 2nd PC a RX480. Only CPU is working!!! With the old Version it works fine with both GPUs.

Please note that if you're using the latest client 7.6.9, there's a manual workaround to add your GPU assuming that you have the Nvidia drivers installed (not the ones from the Windows Updates but the ones from Nvidia site):

Manually download the GPUs.txt file from here: https://apps.foldingathome.org/GPUs.txt (right-click save as GPUs.txt)
Exit the client
Copy the GPUs.txt file from the Downloads folder to %AppData%\FAHClient
Reboot your system
Start up the client and ensure that you can see your GPU in the log file
Add a GPU slot from FAHControl -> Configure -> Slots tab -> Add -> GPU -> OK -> Save
ETA:
Now ↞ Very Soon ↔ Soon ↔ Soon-ish ↔ Not Soon ↠ End Of Time

For me, I was lucky that I didn't have to replace the GPU.txt in my Windows 10 installation. I opened it, search, and found my GPU listed. All I had to do is to reboot the system for fah to recognize my GPU. From there, I was able to add the GPU as a new slot.

The key is to REBOOT system after installation, before adding new slots.

My GPU stays in status 'Paused: waiting for idle'. I usually select the 'On Idle' option, but even if i turn that off, only my CPU is folding. I'm not sure when this started, but I've noticed the GPU project has been at 68% for several nights now. I didn't used to have this problem. I tried to update to 7.6.9, but that didn't solve issue.

Can you please provide some logs?

Do you have your power slider on light ... that pauses the gpu and looks like it is waiting on idle ... if so move slider to medium oy high and gpu folding should continue.

I do have my setting on 'Light'. Is that something that changed? I've always had my setting on 'Light' in the past and haven't had any issues.

How do i attach a log?

Setting of light has always paused gpu to my albeit limited knowledge ... dont believe this is a recent change but I may be wrong.

I've always had setting at 'Light' and my GPU would work on project overnight. It doesn't any more. Even if i uncheck 'Idle' option, my GPU stays at status "Paused: waiting for idle".
