Logs below. New Windows user of FaH and my second install. The first install had the issue below as well. Following some research, I disabled my AV scanner, turned off Windows Firewall, and reinstalled the client. No help. I also went to the core download URLs in question in a browser and the files downloaded successfully but I have no idea where to put them. Looking for some help on either how to resolve the issue or where to put the core files. I want to help out with the COVID work as soon as possible and install this on several machines.
FAHClient acts just like a browser when it downloads the FAHCore and then it installs it in your client.
If I open http://cores.foldingathome.org/v7/win/6 ... ore_a7.fah with my browser, I can download the tarball containing the core. so I conclude that the server is working (at least right now) Unfortunately it's not easy to manually use that tarball and it's a lot better to let FAHClient install it directly -- which works fine for me. The typical Firewall blocks non-browsers from downloading files and FAHClient is not ore-configured to allow that. I did have to configure an exception in my firewall to let FAHClient download the package and you'll need to do that, too.
You can also disable your firewall, but I DO NOT RECOMMEND that.
I was able to resolve this by completely bypassing my firewall. The problem affected the GPU core, not the CPU core.
I have a Sophos XG, which is on the complicated side of the firewall spectrum. I did some digging on how to detect what was being blocked but couldn't get anywhere. I finally decided to use my phone's hotspot function. I connected my computer to the ethernet port of my Asus Wifi repeater, and the repeater picked up the Wifi signal of the phone hotspot. Then it was able to download the GPU core file. I returned my computer to the XG firewall, and it is happily downloading new GPU work units.
It could be the firewall was blocking not the download source for the core file, but the core file itself. I don't know which.
Sorry if I'm not using correct terminology but I think this is info is usable.
From time to time, FAHClient will download a revised version of ative FAHcoCores ... whenever new capabilities i\are introduced. (this may be very rare or more frequently.) I recommend you determine the proper exception to grant in your firewall so it doesn't suspend folding until you happen to notice it. The FAHCores are downloaded only from FAH's official website, not from other sites where contaminated code might resided and checked with FAH's public key.
FYI, the CPU core has been stable for a while now, but the GPU core has been evolving quite a lot in the last month, at least 3 versions, with more to come.
You can use the hotspot trick for a while, but in time find how to allow fahclient to get to the internet.
