I have this same problem, but with my CPU slot. I have an Intel Core i5-6500, which was working fine until I checked it this morning and found the same error - even the same IP address. My cool (in more ways than one) and silent GPU (EVGA nVidia GTX 960) is still chugging away though, which is nice, as that's going to benefit the project much more than any standard CPU ever would.
Anyway, how do I fix this? Also, what is project 10488? I'm completing it just fine, getting points for it and everything, but "A description for this project does not yet exist." It appears to be a range of projects, as I believe I also got a 10487 WU with the same message, though I did once get a 10476 WU which did have a description as part of a group of projects.

Re: Failed to get assignment: AS's [CPU projects]
As suggested, I added the following flag to my CPU slot:
Name: client-type
Value: beta
This seems to have solved my issue. Strangely enough, however, the "beta" a4 core it downloaded is the same as the "normal" one. When I noticed the files were the same size, I ran them through HashCalc, and their hashes indeed match, so they are in fact the same file.

I just read the "beta team info" thread, actually. Interesting. I switched the value to advanced for now.

Re: Failed to get assignment: AS's [CPU projects]
Your post has been moved to a different topic as it is not related to the problem with older GPU's. Adding the beta flag was only recommended as a way for persons using older pre-Fermi GPU cards to get assignments. Otherwise, unless participating in beta testing the most we can recommend is using the advanced flag.
As for the A4 core, there has not been a beta test of a new version of that core in a few years. What is beta are the newer CPU projects that use it. Use of the beta flag for that purpose is only supported in the Beta Team forum. See this topic about participating - viewtopic.php?f=16&t=8.
If you post the first 100 or so lines of your log using the direction in the Welcome topic - viewtopic.php?f=16&t=26036, we can see how your system is configured and give suggestions on how to get CPU WU's.
I will notify the appropriate persons about the missing project descriptions.

Hopefully this is enough info:
