Does a folding continue from the point it was stopped ?

Post by stefanostam »

Hello

I have just started to "fold" in my own computer. I see that the project which is running now in my computer needs 3 more days to finish but I cannot leave my computer running continously for 3 days so sometimes I have to turn it off or put it to sleep.

If I do so and stop the folding process when I start it again does it continue from the point were it was stopped ?

If you're running a GPU slot, sleeping the computer will most likely crash the current WU. Microsoft's sleep/awake cycle does checkpoint/resume processes running in the CPU but data being processed by the GPU is not restored. (Apparently they still think a GPU is just used to calculate data for the display and every process can refresh its window.) For this reason, FAH routinely disables sleep. Development is considering some possible alternate resolutions for a future version, but nothing may come of it.

Restarting the client (including by way of a reboot) will resume work from the previous checkpoint which can be as much as about 15 minutes earlier than where it was stopped.

Also, the SMP and GPU Work Units sometimes have very close deadlines, depending on the speed of your CPU and GPU. Check to see whether the estimated finish time will be in time for the deadline. If it looks like you will have problems meeting the deadlines, you may have to FINISH the current Work Unit, delete the current Slot in FAHControl, and create a new Slot for a single-core CPU. The uniprocessor Work Units generally have looser deadlines.

It should be noted that when the client reports a projected completion time, it cannot make accurate predictions until FAH has been running for some time. Projections based on some processing time plus some down-time are bound to be inaccurate.

Welcome to the F@H Forum stefanostam,

Please note that if you find that you can't complete WUs before the Timeout Deadline, you may consider using the Folding App for Chrome (viewtopic.php?f=95&t=25878) which assigns WUs that takes anywhere from minutes to few hours to fold, depending on your hardware.
