The relevanse of the GPU1 projects
Are the GPU1 WUs of any use right now, or are they just still given out for people to get some PPD on an endless run of the same WUs over and over again?
I fold with: 9800GX2, 8800 GS, 1,3GHz Athlon and 1,8GHz Athlon 64
I BOINC with: Q6600 2,4GHz and Athlon X2 2,2GHz

Re: The relevanse of the GPU1 projects
All WUs handed out are needed for the project, nothing is being wasted by issuing WUs over and over again.
But it was announced some time back that the GPU1 is on its way out (probably within couple of months), so it would be better to sell off the 1XXX based GPU cards and go for 2XXX, 3XXX or even 4XXX instead.

Updates to the Download page/GPU2 goes live
Vijay Pande wrote:We have also updated the GPU client on the download page, with GPU client downloads pointing to GPU2 rather than GPU1. This is a major step forward for FAH, as we move to our second generation GPU client ("GPU2"). It's also an important time to note the contributions of the GPU1 client: we've been able to learn a great deal of running GPU's "in the wild," which is very different than in the lab, and what we've learned has gone into GPU2. GPU2 is much easier to run, more reliable scientifically, and has more advanced algorithms. Due to these differences, GPU1 has become obsolete. However, we are working to write a paper with what we've learned from GPU1 and acquiring data for that paper will need some more GPU1 cycles.
Thus, we will continue the GPU1 projects for a little while longer (likely a month or so), while we encourage people to transition to GPU2. We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has run the GPU1 client and given us such useful data to advance to the second generation client.

Huh, moving on to GPU2? So you can run the GPU2 client on 1900 cards, and HD* cards run 1900 WUs?

Yes, no, no. The GPU2 client on 2xxx/3xxx/4xxx cards are completely replacing the GPU1 client on 1xxx cards. GPU1 and 1xxx are going EOL this summer/winter in regards to fah.Ahavi wrote:Huh, moving on to GPU2? So you can run the GPU2 client on 1900 cards, and HD* cards run 1900 WUs?
The use of the word "transition" in Vijay's blog was maybe not the best descriptor.
