Windows Cannot Find...

Post by PLOTYNSTYNE »

I installed the F@H software on my laptop a while ago, and figured that maybe I could use my desktop that hardly gets used. It has the same OS as my laptop and I figured it would be just as easy to set up. However...

Every time I try to start up my client, it tells me in an error message:

Code: Select all

Windows cannot find 'http://folding.stanford.edu/client/'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search.
It seems to make the program look for the connection on the computer itself rather than connecting to the internet to do the search.

I did not encounter this problem when setting up on my laptop and I was unable to find a similar problem on a cursory search of the web. Help, please?

Does the desktop have all the latest patches, drivers, and browser versions?

Welcome to the F@H Forum PLOTYNSTYNE,

If your answer is yes to the questions that 7im asked, then, are you running the FAHClient before attempting to open up Web Control? Can you open up Advanced Control (FAHControl) by right-clicking the icon in the notification tray?

@7im
I believe I have everything current on it. It's Windows XP Professional 2002 Service Pack 3. I update my browsers as soon as the updates come, so I believe they're all up to date.

@PantherX
I was able to open up the advanced controls, and it would tell me that it was working but I'd come back later and see that it hadn't made any progress. I opened a browser and entered the folding.stanford.edu/client/ url and it connected to my client, but then it would tell me that it was "waiting" for a certain amount of time. When that time finished, it would say "WORKING" for a moment, then go back to "WAITING" again.

EDIT (I was checking things out and verifying my answers while typing): I have gotten it to connect properly on opening the client. It now automatically opens up a Firefox window (or new tab if I have a window open already) when I initially activate the client, just like on my laptop. I disabled Internet Explorer and set Firefox to my default browser again through my Control Panel, though I had already made it my default browser beforehand.
I arrived at this resolution based on your question, 7im, as well as the fact that when I opened up my Advanced Controls and clicked my name to see my contributions it brought up the web page in Internet Explorer even though that wasn't even my default browser. Thanks much!

However, new issue. Before when I would go to the Web Control, it would have a lot more information on the page than it does now. Before I would get the project number, who was heading the project, and certain other information that I can't quite recall. Now all I get is the project number (10450) and nothing else. This is also true on my laptop, the settings of which I haven't changed since I last ran it. Is this an intended change, or am I doing something wrong there?

Additionally, when I go to my stats page, it tells me that I have had 0 clients active in the past 7 days even though I currently have two clients running. I entered the same name and passkey on my desktop as I did for my laptop, and I haven't changed any settings on my laptop since I first set it up. Is this a problem, or does it only register a client as active when it completes a project?

I thank you for your time and effort to help me resolve my issues. Is this the proper way to continue, or should I have created a new thread for the new issues?

Sometimes it takes a while for new projects to have the description information added.

Active clients is defined as you guessed, clients that have returned a completed work unit in that time frame.

Seems an issue that may be spreading?

I've just tried it on a couple of mine- projects 9000 and 9004. The Web control just comes back with "You are contributing to Project xxxx" and nothing else, clicking the link in FAHControl brings up full project information.

(The mods may think this should be a new topic, if so then please move as thought appropriate)

Edit- same happens on 10450 on another machine.

It's not spreading. It's not a disease or virus. You just found more projects without a description.

And while it's nice to have those, it's not a requirement to release to project and start beta testing, because the project may or may not come out of beta. So sometimes they simply forget. They're human.

Thanks for the feedback. And if not already, I'm sure one of the mods will soon contacted PG about this.

I'll grant that… it's why software (and project) quality assurance techniques exist. All it needs is a checklist before a project goes to full release.

It might even have a bearing on this thread, first impressions matter.

I'm aware of that thread. You may not have noted how often I posted in it.

My comment about them forgetting was sarcasm. It would be wrong to assume a scientific research project does not have a release checklist. The scientific method, by definition, forces them make checklists so their results are reproducible.

More specifically, there are times when the science behind a project is competing for funding, and to disclose the project data prematurely could give competing researchers a leg up. That's one reason. I'm sure there are other reasons for not publishing project information. Not all of them are disclosed to us.
