Help configuring AMD 7850
Hi everyone!
I am new to folding so I need a short help to configure my system. I am aware that there might be solution posted elsewhere, but I haven't found it so you can also direct me.
I am running Intel i3 3220+ Radeon 7850 + 8GB RAM
Folding@home client 7.3.6
Windows 7 64 bit
Both of my units are detected, as GPU:0 and CPU:3
The thing is, I am not sure whether these are getting as many PPD as they should.
HD7850 is doing 4200-4600 PPD while Intel i3 is doing just below 2000. This is below what I read from other people posting on Internet.
(please note, these scores are from the FAH control)
So my question is- should I do something to increase performance? All the settings so far are default.
Should I dedicate one thread or one core to GPU?
Right now FahCore_16 which is working with GPU is taking 20-25% of CPU usage, while a3 which is working on the CPU project takes the rest of CPU capacity.
Thanks to everybody for help in advance.
My machine is not a beast, but HD7850 is a decent card and since I keep my PC on >18h/day it should be worth it on the long run.

Re: Help configuring AMD 7850
set client-type to advanced for you GPU slot! Run the Advanced control and click configure. Switch to the slots tab and double click the GPU slot. Finally click add in the extra slot option and add client-type = advanced. click OK, and OK and save.

Hi! Thanks for your reply!
When I click "add" on extra slot options it asks me for "name" and "value"
What should I do here?

Re: Help configuring AMD 7850
Welcome to the F@H Forum Black_Adder_Cro,
Please note that if your system isn't dedicated to running F@H, you may want to experiment with CPU:3 or CPU:2 to find out which gives you the most PPD for the CPU. The reason is that if the CPU folding is interrupted, the loss in PPD is non-linear. To change the CPU count from 3 to 2, please open Advanced Control (AKA FAHControl) -> Configure -> Slots Tab -> CPU -> There you can change the value from -1 to 3 or 2, depending on your preference.
Also note that it is advised to install the latest WHQL Drivers from AMD when running FahCore_17 WUs (Work Units) to make the best possible use of your hardware.

Re: Help configuring AMD 7850
Hi! Thanks!
My PC is not dedicated to Folding, but it is running mostly without usage from user. It is running maybe 16h/day in idle and couple of hours of use.
Should I still do this?
My processor is dual core hyper threaded i3
I have the latest Catalyst drivers, should that be fine for AMD card?
I haven't noticed any FahCore_17 WUs yet.

Re: Help configuring AMD 7850
It depends on you, if you want to optimize it further, we can help you to do so. If not, that too is fine. A quick way to determine if everything is working fine is to open up Task Manager and see what the total CPU Usage percentage is. If for most of the day (including when you are working), the percentage is below 100%, then there isn't any resource contention. If you constantly see 100% CPU Usage, then resources are being over-subscribed and thus, we would recommend that F@H configuration may need to be tweaked so ensure that no over-utilization of the resources is taking place.
Yes, the latest WHQL Drivers should work flawlessly with your GPU and FahCore_17 WUs. Can you please refresh the log and then post the initial section which contains the system configuration and F@H configuration along with the ending of the log so we can see what exactly is happening? It could be that FahCore_16 WUs are taking long to finish and once they are successfully completed, you will hopefully be assigned FahCore_17 WUs. Worst case is that your GPU is hung up on FahCore_16 WUs and the solution to that is to delete the WU, if needed. We would have to see the log to determine that.

Yes, the CPU usage is constantly 100% if both CPU and GPU slots are available.
Right now I am running GPU only ( I stopped CPU slot, you can see that at the end of the log).
GPU process uses about 26% of CPU
So far all my WUs for GPU were core 16

Re: Help configuring AMD 7850
From the log, it seems that you were already assigned FahCore_16 WU before the client-type was configured. It seems that within 6 - 7 hours, your FahCore_16 WU will finish and hopefully, the next WU assigned, will be FahCore_17 WU. It will use your CPU and GPU in a much more efficient manner. Once your GPU started processing FahCore_17 WUs, we can decide if either CPU:2 or CPU:3 will be your best option.
When you say "GPU Process", you mean that in task manager, FahCore_16 is using 26% of the CPU, right?

Yes, that's what I meant for the GPU process.
Thanks!

Re: Help configuring AMD 7850
Hi!
I need help again!
First, the GPU WU is at 99% and not moving at all.
It's a core_16 one. The log simply stopped recording anything other than opening a web client couple of hours ago. It stopped at 59%. The WU is 99.99% now and there is no upload in the queue, just the unit itself.
Also, I noticed that since I've been using Folding I the sleep function doesn't work. I am using Windows 7 and when I press sleep, it locks the system, the same as if I clicked LOCK. Is this a known issue?

Re: Help configuring AMD 7850
What you are reporting is consistent with reports from other folders who had a video driver crash and reset occur during the processing of a WU on their GPU. You can check the Windows logs to see if that happened. Stopping and then restarting the folding usually will get the WU going again. The 99% estimate with no progress reported in the log happens when the client loses contact with the folding core doing the actual folding calculations.
With GPU folding active, sleep is disabled. This is because in many cases sleep removes power from the GPU, and loses the current folding data. On waking the usual result is a crash of the folding process or corruption of the data. CPU folding does not have the same issue as the default sleep settings preserve the data in RAM or save to the hard drive for restoration after coming out of sleep.

Re: Help configuring AMD 7850
You are right, my drivers did crash.
EDIT: seems to work now, resumed from 59% (point when it stopped logging)
Also, regarding the CPU WU:
When I click finish, and it finishes it normally stops after the WU is complete. However, if I restart my PC it starts again in the next session. Can I actually make it work so that I can resume it when I want it and not every time when I restart my PC or even when I just move the slider on the web client?
Thanks loads for help!!!

Re: Help configuring AMD 7850
The finish does not carry-over through reboots. However, you can add the extra client option pause-on-start=true and the client will not start folding till you manually start it.
