7870 - Bad PlatformID Size

It seems that a lot of GPU problems revolve around specific versions of drivers. Though AMD has their own support structure, you can often learn from information reported by others who fold.

7870 - Bad PlatformID Size

Post by ArVee »

New card, latest non-beta drivers from ATI. I get immediate failures with the above-noted error message. Not sure what to do, I'm new to non-NVidia cards but I didn't think this would be this odd. Help!

Which version of the drivers did you install? Also, when you installed the drivers did you include the OpenCL support contained in the package?

Thanks for the response, Joe, and I think you're right on it. Driver version is 13.4 and I went for everything during the install, but both GPU-Z and GPU Caps Viewer are showing no OpenCL support. I went out looking and OpenGL downloads seemed to be only available with Vista and up - is the problem here due to that machine being back on XP ???? I find that hard to believe but I've spent hours trying to figure this thing out and that's the only thing I've come up with. Still don't believe it actually, but why else would it be showing no OpenCL? Open to any suggestions including where to try for a standalone OpenCL d/l .

Yes, that is because you are running XP. I did not notice that the first time I scanned through your log. AMD-ATI dropped support for OpenCL on XP a while back, I would have to look it up for an exact timeframe. I think it was late 2011 or early 2012. The last driver package with OpenCL support would be usable to fold WU's using Core_16, but as I recall that might not work for the newer Core_17 projects.

OK, don't like the answer but I nevertheless DO like getting one. Core 17 is why I did this, so I guess this is what makes get on my horse and get to upgrading that machine. Thanks, Joe!

I did manage to find a reference, the last version of Catalyst that provided OpenCL support for XP was 12.1. Later versions no longer provide it.
