New (used) PC with 980x and dual 5970's folding

After getting reprimanded on here a few years back for the 4850 which was simply terrible at folding, I stopped on it back then and went back to its competitor. However, I just bought a used Alienware computer and it is running an Intel i7 980 Extreme 6 core on water and it also has a pair of 5970 cards in them. It had a fresh OS without drivers so I threw the latest on there and grabbed the latest FAH and started it up. The CPU is really running well but all 4 GPU's fail nearly instantly.

So, I spent the last several hours on here reading about how to get these to fold first of all, and get the max out of them. Or, are they still so low PPD-Wise that it would be better just to fold with CPU only? Or, I could even throw some spare weak extra NV cards I have such as 430? If you suggest folding with them, which driver is the optimal one at this point? It appears more people are having luck with 13.1, is that correct?

1. The System Info and Config sections of your log as explained here.
2. The Device ID (xxxx - xxxx) as shown in GPU-Z or you can run "FAHClient --lspci" (without the quotes) in a Command Prompt window and paste the output here.

GPU-Z Device ID is: 1002-689C

I turned off GPU folding on it in the meantime so I wouldn't get work units I couldn't finish. I'll set them up again and post the first part you requested later. Thank you for your help.

The latest stable release of Catalyst for folding Core 16 WU's is known to be 12.8. Persons running later releases usually have used just the newer driver with the older SDK that was included in the 12.8 install. If you have installed a newer version, it needs to be completely cleaned out before reinstalling the older SDK and the driver. There are a couple of topics that have discussed this and the procedures needed. There is a newer core in development that works better with the newer versions of the SDK, you can read about that in the Beta Test Forum.

Well, before I saw Joes reply I let the CPU unit finish the reinstalled it so it would find the GPU's again. This time I put the latest drivers on it again, dummy plugs, DISABLED CROSSFIRE, and kicked it off and it is at least running and not failing instantly. However, one thing I notice is that all 4 GPU's combined don't total as much as just the CPU was before (running 4 ATI's uses up most of the 980x CPU.

Last time I checked, you need 1 CPU per AMD GPU to fold with FahCore_16. Thus you need 4 CPUs free but it seems that you only have 2 CPUs:

Try SMP:8 which will give you 100% CPU Usage or SMP:6 which will give you some free CPU Cycles to use for your non-folding applications if the system isn't a dedicated folding machine. Do note that FahCore_16 isn't very efficient on AMD GPUs.

Just to see what the cards would do on their own, I paused the CPU core and now they are all averaging ~5200 PPD (each) or so. I'll let it go overnight and see if anything changes production-wise. Then, I think I will do as you suggest Panther and see if I can net more than I was getting with just the CPU (which was around 20k +/-).

At this time anyway, this is a dedicated folder (as are most of my systems). I do game every few weeks for a day and I'll just shut it down during that time. To be honest, I thought I remembered these 1366 i7 Hexa-cores producing more than they are. I thought that at 6 cores (plus hyperthreading) would outperform my AMD FX-8150 8 core but that doesn't seem to be the case. Perhaps I am thinking of when people were running -bigadv on them and getting big bonus points.

Does anyone know if the new core they are working on for AMD's will work on the 5900 series GPU or is it just for the newer models? Perhaps I should consider selling/trading them off for cards from the other team (since they are really just for folding anyway).

FahCore_17 supports AMD HD 5000 Series or higher.

Well, after running just the CPU for a week or so, I can say that while consuming around 800 watts from the wall to fold with the 4 ATI GPU's, and 5 CPU cores, I end up with ~26k ppd combined. With just the CPU alone, it pulls around 325 watts from the wall, and is getting over 30k ppd.
I guess that answers that question. I will see if I can get a trade on C-list. If not, I'll just wait until 17 is ready. That is wild, I never would have guessed it to be that much difference (other than the amount of heat produced).
