PRCG 6338, 40, 44, 7 Bad? (Was FahCore_a4.exe stopped)

Hello!

I was running FAH just fine on my WIN7 over week, until today. FahCore keeps crashing, I have already cleaned c:\programdata\fahclient folder where about everything is located, but it didn't help.

It looks like you have a WU that might be bad. Or possibly, Project 6338 is simulating a small protein and was limited to uniprocessor or SMP:2 systems, and for this particular WU is not splitting into two threads properly and crashing the core. If you want to try checking on the second possibility, pause folding and change the SMP count to 1 using Configure and then restart the SMP slot. If the WU folds, then that was the problem. You can change back to SMP:2 afterwards.

If that does not work, or you don't want to try the setting change, you can dump the WU. Copying directions given by another mod - bollix47, do the following:
You need to Pause folding and delete work/00.

To find work/00 click on Start>All Programs>FAHClient>Data Directory>work

There you can right-click on 00 and select delete.

Error 0xc0000005 also happens if you run out of memory. Is there a limit on your page pool or do you have very little RAM?

Well that problem went away later evening after lot of crashed clients.

WU dump was first thing what I tryed to fix it, but didn't work ;)

And I have 6G mem on this machine so I don't thing it was memory issue.

I am also having problems with PRCG 6338 (#'s 44,28,1 ; 27,24,5 ; 25,45,7 ; those are the only 3 I wrote down...), running windows 7 64 bit on a dual core 3.2 GHZ machine with 4 GB ram. I more than doubled my pg sp -- no joy. Worth a try even though all other WU work fine. The hoop I have been jumping through is 1. kill the processes 2. uninstall FAH 3. reinstall. then I have either downloaded a WU that worked or I rinse and repeat. frustrating...especially when it happens 2 or 3 times in a row. I tried the /work/00 suggestion, hoping to eliminate the reinstall cycle, but all i ever got was 6338.
Just re-installed again---got 8028 (1550,4,15) back to folding. Hope this issue is resolved soon. I am getting a new pc tomorrow and really don't want to have to arm wrestle it to get a little folding done. AND I won't be paying much attention to this one.

I recieved 5 of those project WU's (16,3,4; 8,39,1 ; 8,35,7 ; 24,53,0 ; 27,5,9) overnight every one of them did not finish, then do slot stoped as failed.
Folding other projects fine, dont know if i ever finished this project WU's fine.

The fault (UNKNOWN_ENUM (-1073741819 = 0xc0000005)) is generated by an illegal “memory access violation”. It could be that certain 6338 WUs have an error like an untested out-of-bounds array index. It is not on all 6338 WUs, as I have had many of them here, and all completed successfully.

If you received lots of those errors, I really would be checking your ram with Memtest86+ to check for a hidden HW issue with your RAM. There are certainly other possibilities such as a problematic video driver too. But then lots of people have not have a problem with that project so I am suspicious that there may be an issue with your specific setup.

The PC is 100% stable and memtest does not find any problems nor any other stability test i can throw at it, and the weird thing is those WU's don't even start to fold, with faulty hw there should be some progress before random failure. Im on a project 8028 atm, will see what i will get next. Im folding on this machine for past few months, and there was no problem with any SMP WU i know of.
This lets me to believe problem might be related to a specific PC configuration, system, cpu or smth else. Would be nice if some1 would check if i ever did finish WU's from this project successfully

A Project that followed on from this one did experience stability problems, so was pulled back for further testing. Most persons are not seeing failures from this project, and those who have had failures usually have had only one or two. Could have been just a bad run of luck for the half hour that you got this group, or another issue to be investigated. The more reports that come in, the better chance of finding a cause if there is one.

As for the WU's you listed, I have gone through the database and looked up yours and others mentioned in this topic. Some have no reports at all yet, and others have been successfully completed by other folders:

I don't know if PG can associate a specific WU turned in to a PC configuration, etc. or not. It may take reports such as yours that include configuration information along with the failure reports to provide the association. As for checking if you had successfully turned in a Project 6338 WU, the mods can't look up that in general just specific ones. You can check your log files, by default the V7 client keeps a folder of up to 16 prior logs in the same location as the current log and work files. You can open them up in Notepad or other text editor to search for 6338.

One good piece of information showed up in your log, the F@H client did successfully detect repeated errors processing the WU's and properly discarded them automatically. That has not happened in every case.

I checked the past logs and there was no 6338 units in them which means those 5 was the only one i received. Well we've to see what will happen when i receive more of those. I will monitor situation and report anything i find.

The fact that you had a series of 5 failures, all of which were completed by the next person to which it was assigned means that statistically speaking, your computer is much less stable that those belonging to the rest of the FAH community. When you decided that your computer was "100% stable" was one of programs that you used to validate that StressCPU2?

I just checked PC with the stresscpu2 program u linked. It did run fine for 3 hrs, will leave it for about 20 hrs running tomorrow to be sure.

Almost precisely a week ago in a separate thread I reported a core crash which a few of you suspected might be related to processing of Project 6338 WUs. Last night another (Windows) error message dialogue popped up over the FAH Client Control informing me that something had gone wrong in the a4 core and [Windows?] needed to close the FAH client. I was also informed that I "might" lose some data and Microsoft requested that I send them an error report. A quick scan of the progress meter indicated that the two WUs that were downloaded had barely commenced processing - actually neither one of them was showing any (or very little) progress - so I decided to click on "Quit" and simply restart the FAH client.

Upon restart, I noticed that a 6338 WU, (i.e. Run 49, Clone 61, Gen 2), downloaded with an ETA of 7 hours 00 mins and credit of 598.97 points. My first thought was "Uh oh, here we go again ..." as I wondered if this was the WU that had caused the previous error message and forced me to shut down. So I watched PRGC 6338 (49, 61, 2) pretty closely for nearly the entire seven hours that it executed. I'm happy to report that the WU completed processing and apparently was returned without mishap.

There has been speculation in this and other threads that there may be a subtle (intermittent) programming flaw that is occurring in only some (or a few) of the 6338 WUs - this flaw (or "bug") is not endemic to all of the 6338 WUs. Successful execution of 6338 (49, 61, 2) on my machine would tend to reinforce this theory.

A fundamental assumption is that a stable computer will give repeatable results that match the results given by some other computer, and in the case you mentioned, that didn't happen. It's also possible that a software bug can also produce non-repeatable results (generally it's from poorly written software where data is not initialized or where data overwrites unexpected areas of RAM). In a specific case, you cannot absolutely rule out one cause or the other without more information.

Keep searching for more information.
