Best settings - V7 + 2600K + GTX 570 + Windows 7 64bit

Post by Muffel2k »

Good morning,

since they have change the requirements for bigadv folding I went back to normal SMP and GPU.
Oc'ed my 2600K to 4.3Ghz and now I am about to configure the V7 clients for an optimal PPD output. At the moment I am using all cores for SMP folding along the GPU folding, don't see any difference in PPD when I go back to 7 cores for SMP and 1 for GPU.
Can you recommend settings like "client-type -- advanced" or "max-packet-size -- big"?

Getting around 30K atm, think I could get more.

I wouldn't recommend using 7 since it is a Prime Number and is known to cause issues with some Projects. You can use even values like 6 and 8 which won't cause issues. Do note that the current V7 has a bug in the PPD so you will have to wait until this bug is fixed or until a 3rd party application supports V7 and is able to calculate the PPD.

I see and what about the "advanced" flag? Is it recommended to use it for more PPD (even when it could cause some instability)?

There is no "recommendation" about advanced. That decision is entirely up to you.

The -advmethods/advanced flag has never been about more PPD.

New projects go through several stages from internal testing to beta testing to advanced testing to full public release to FAH. During each stage the likelihood of unstable WUs decreases. You may use the setting and accept WUs from the last two categories or remove the flag and only get the most stable WUs. If we assume that a project that is in the advanced category happens to give some folks a higher PPD than some other project, you might have to wait a little longer to get it when it moves to full release. The same would be true if we assume that a project in the advanced category happens to give some folks a lower PPD. Any difference in PPD is temporary.

The only real advantage is that you may have a wider range of projects, but that's not always true, either.

I don't know much about advanced WUs, but I do know that they've never given me a problem. So far, I've folded over 60 advanced WUs, and none of them have ever seemed to cause crashes or any obvious instability. I'm not sure about beta units though. I've never folded one but I can bet they are pretty unstable!
