Messed up installation

Post by ManxDave »

Complete Newbie warning. After hearing about the good work this project is doing I thought I would use the massive multi-CPU redundancy for something useful. I went to your home page, downloded the Windows installer and ran it. After that I didn't see anything about client choices etc. I went to your Passkey site made up a username and obtained a Passkey, they are now entered.

F@H appears to be working OK, its up to about 15% but it doesn't start automatically on PC boot, I have to start the program manually. Also the logfile states "Previous termination of core was improper". I wonder if there are any other config changes needed to help it run as efficiently as possible?

Finally feedback, how do I know you are getting the results from my PC? I am not that bothered about being in a team or league tables etc but if this is necessary how do I go about it?

If you want a look at my logfile do I just attach it as an 'image'?

Copy and paste it and wrap it in code tags.

It is likely that you have installed the v6 Windows client. By default this will run a classic uniprocess core.
There is a user guide here

There is a new client, v7, which is currently in Beta testing, which automatically detects the capability of your hardware and will offer the appropriate configuration. You can download it from here
You can also find links to user guides on that download page, and additional guides on the forum

If you are running Windows XP, there are options to run clients automatically (as a service), for later versions of Windows the Uniprocessor and SMP clients can run as a service, but not the GPU client.

You do not need to join a team, but equally you can join any existing team or start your own.

If you need to attach a logfile, use the Code button to put the Code html tags in your post and paste your logfile between the Code and /Code tags.

Thanks to you both for the replies. My setup:-
i7 950 6GB RAM
Radeon HD5850 1GB RAM GPU Clock 725Mhz ( I think )
Win7

From browsing through the forum it sounds like I could do a better job with the SMP version? Currently my CPU only seems to reach 13% max. I'll probably wait until this work unit is finished then download the v7 SMP version, unless anyone suggests otherwise.

I'll attach the log file anyway in case anybody can spot any serious problems. I have edited out my Client Id as suggested somewhere here.

Thanks

The Uniprocessor core is doing what it's supposed to do - execute one work unit on one CPU core. The i7 950 part from Intel has four physical cores with hyperthreading. The operating system, and the Folding at home software, will detect this as having 8 cores. Now, the i7 950 only has 4 real cores, and 4 Floating Point units, but the hyperthreading can take advantage of the pipelining for most non-floating point logical computations. It's not an 8-core system, but in the Sandy Bridge equivalent, an i7 2600 (4 cores/HT) somewhat outperforms an i5 2500 (4 cores/no HT).

So - the most a uniprocessor work unit will consume is one thread's worth of the processor. 13% is 1/8th rounded up!!

So, SMP is the thing for your processor. If you want to try to install v7, it will detect both the multi-cores/threads and the GPU, and will set up both an SMP and a GPU Slot.

Since you have an ATI GPU, you should be mindful that most of one thread's worth of CPU power is needed to care and feed for the acutal computation going on in the GPU itself. This is in contrast to the Nvidia Fermi GPUs that require very little CPU care and feeding to keep the GPU itself going.

Most people with an ATI GPU and SMP set the client to process SMP with fewer cores/threads than are physically available. Default in both v6 and v7 Folding at home SMP is to use all the available threads/cores. With an 8-thread system, it is advisable to set "SMP 6" or using 6 cores/threads for SMP. SMP-7 is a legal choice and leaves as much CPU power to the SMP client as possible. However, It has been found that there are some of the SMP projects that bork out with an odd number of threads - 7 in particular. So, 6 would be prudent.

The installation options and flags to be sent are covered in the links identified in the posts above.

Happy folding.

Thank you for the comprehensive reply, I now understand why my overall CPU percentage was at 13%.

I couldn't resist and downloaded v7, accepted the defaults of SMP and GPU, followed the links to set my SMP to 6 instead of using the default 8 ( -1 ) and it is flying along with the CPU's at 100%.

The v7 GUI is much easier to understand and I like the links to the simple scientific explanation of the project being worked on.

Thanks to everyone for your help today,
Dave
