specs and questions

Post by rensign »

hello everyone,

i have heard of F@H, but never really looked into it until today. bored, tired of playing games and being an impulsive person, i downloaded the first client i saw and began to run it... after doing a little more research, i believe i had the single core app b/c it took about 6 hours to run 250 (whatever), i downloaded the GPU3 app. i am currently at 61% of 50,000,000, total time said to be about 3.5 hrs at 661 ns/day. much better than the first :)

after joining the forum and reading a little more, i saw people talking about the beta V7. sooooo.....

1) if i get the beta V7 should i uninstall the other 2?
1a) should get V7, or just keep the GPU3 one?

2) will changing the machine ID screw with the data... i.e. system recognition, data downloads ? original DL was machine 1, the GPU3 is set to machine 2? <--- i dont know if this question makes sense.

3) is there any way to close the client, and resume where u left off? not just pause/resume, but after a reboot?

general specs:

AMD X4 955 @ 3.8
PNY GTX 460
8 gigs @ 1600
win7 64 professional

on a side note, just b/c i saw people talking about this. i will not be running this 24/7. i do a lot of video editing, digital compositing, and 3D modeling. unless u think i can :D

im sure i could have found these answers somewhere in the forums, but im lazy... and its late... and im tired, also i wouldnt have a chance to say hi :D

i can provide any additional data that would further help in answering my questions. i will also be reading more in the forums the next couple of days, so be easy on the flame :D

thanks

Welcome to the F@H Forum rensign,

If you plan to run the V7 Beta software, make sure that you finish the work on the v6 F@H Clients by selecting "pause after work done" or by using -oneunit flag (http://fahwiki.net/index.php/How_do_I_a ... _client%3F).

Your hardware is supported by both v6 and V7 so the choice is yours. However, in V7, you install a single software and then make appropriate slots while in v6, you need to install each type of client for different hardware. V7 is easy to setup as long as you don't encounter and bugs.

Changing the Machine ID will effect some downloads/uploads so I would suggest that you leave it as default in v6 as it is correctly configured for now. Do note that V7 has a completely different methods so Machine IDs aren't used in it.

When you want to reboot the system, simply exit the client (if is it paused, then unpause it before the reboot), wait for few seconds (a minute or two to be on the safe side) and then reboot it. When you start the client again, it should hopefully continue from the last checkpoint without any issues.

Since you plan on doing CPU/GPU intensive work, if it is for the majority of time (>10 hours) then I would suggest that you install the Classic Clients for each core. That way, when you are working, you will (hopefully) not see any lagging or slow downs with your work and with the extended deadlines, you can easily finish them in time and run it 24/7

Do experiment with your system to find the optimum F@H Usage and tell us about it :)

i have installed v7 and ran into some issues *** i dont know if i should start another thread in the beta forum ***

quick rundown:

selected GPU as primary option
after the program opened it began to fold with no problems
i added SMP - it defaulted to 4
----- all 4 cores shot to 100% i waited for 30 min with no change in the progress bar <stayed at 0%>
----- when i tried to click on the v7 app, everything changed to "box's" and the prog crashed, caused mild system instability - so i restarted comp

upon restart same thing happened, i killed the SMP so the GPU could finish and i am waiting for that to be done until i mess with SMP again.

unfortunately i was unable to get a log of this... i tried looking in the system files but could not find any "log" file, and the v7 app log reset.

i will update, also let me know if more info is needed besides a log.

If you're running Windows, check the AllPrograms menu for FAHClient and open the "data files" shortcut to find the logs.

FAH clients are designed to us all unused resources. The SMP client is designed to run all of your CPU's at 100% and since you've called it a "mild instability" you're probably overclocking. FAH generally uses more computational resources than the traditional stability tests so you'll need to back down on some of your settings. (The 3rd party forum lists a few benchmarks that are probably better than whatever you've used.) There are also other ways to deal with this issue, but that's the most common solution.

hey bruce, i actually was just about to post an update b/c i started a new thread in the v7 beta area, i cant link it yet due to the "spam warning" b/c i am a noob to forum. new thread is called "v7 SMP issues"

i do oc, and benchmark with 3DMark vantage and Prime95 with no issues... and it looks like its just affecting firefox when it crashes. i managed to get a dump of my last crash it it is up in the new thread.

thanks for the info ;]

edit: found the log folder ;]

Search the forum for prime95 and I'll bet that the only discussions you find say that it's not representative of FAH's utilization -- and suggestions for a couple of better options.

Yes, as a newbie you can't post links yet. It does keep most spam-bots from messing with the forum.
