Getting ID from AS:

Post by muttonhunter »

I loaded a new linux os on my machine, set up smp and tried to configure it. For the last 10 hours it has been trying to get a user Id with no luck.

[04:43:21] - Ask before connecting: No
[04:43:21] - User name: muttonhunter (Team 32035)
[04:43:21] - User ID not found locally
[04:43:21] + Requesting User ID from server
[04:43:21] - Getting ID from AS:
[04:43:21] Connecting to http://assign.stanford.edu:8080/
[04:46:30] - Couldn't send HTTP request to server
[04:46:30] + Could not connect to Primary Assignment Server for ID
[04:46:30] Connecting to http://assign2.stanford.edu:80/
[04:49:39] - Couldn't send HTTP request to server
[04:49:39] + Could not connect to Secondary Assignment Server for ID
[04:49:39]
+ Could not get ID from server. Retrying...

did i do something incorrect or is there a problem with AS?

Does the machine has network access? Can you go to a website using a browser? Next copy and paste the http://assign.stanford.edu:8080 url into the address box and go there what response do you get? The same can be done with http://assign2.stanford.edu:80/ You should get an "OK" response if everything is good with internet access.

As of right now both servers are working fine.

See if it works if you temporarily disable your firewall (including the one that may be built into your AntiVirus software. If so, then you know where to look to establish an exception that lets FAH connect to the same sites that your browser does.

I wondered about that when I made my suggestion, but you're in a general forum so I made a bet based on overall popularity . . . and lost. 8-) I should have reviewed the first line of your post, though.

I'm glad it's fixed.

Me wonders how loosing permissions (had you set them to 0777?) could affect client's ability to speak to assign.stanford.edu?

And one more -- wrap yours logs in 'code' tags (that means: welcome to the forum!) :)

I am no linux expert, barely a competent user, but i guess that not having permission to write to the fah folders would affect my computers ability to speak to stanford.

I had just reinstalled my os, and had (i think) used the default permissions as i have done with every other reinstall of os and fah.

things in real life have been a little crazy, and i may have not installed fah in my usual manner
or maybe i was in a hurry or distracted.
it is possible that i may have installed fah as root and was trying to access stanford as regular user, or maybe the other way around.

I've made a set (seemingly complete) of experiments and I'm proud to report:
  • removing execute permissions (on directory!) and starting client (with no options) results in 'permission denied' from shell;

removing write permissions (on directory!) whatever way (either rights or owner) and starting client (with no options again) results in seemingly infinite cycle of configuration attempts (ends with 'could not write MyFolding.html' from client (obviously)).
Then me still wonders.

Folding since Folding began (~2000) and ran Genome@Home for a while too.
Ran Seti@Home prior to that.

Most of that could be fixed if it was perceived as a problem, by making it fold out of /tmp by default. So the client could be installed anywhere, but the downloaded files and cores would always be downloaded to a directory in /tmp, so therefore (for most configs) user perms wouldnt be an issue.

But it isnt a problem. :)
