Protomol core on old CPUs

Post by Bob8421 »

According to the news blog announcing the Protomol core...

"If you have a processor that doesn’t have the above mentioned optimizations (Pentium 3, Athlon XP, etc.), please report the behavior and the performance of this core on your machine."

I am running an Athlon MP 2800+ system (SSE only) with Windows 2000 and the v5.04 client. Overnight both CPUs finished their GROMACS work units and were assigned new Protomol units. One CPU started the work unit properly and is working as expected (slower than newer CPUs). It is currently at about 50%.

The second CPU received the same client-core communications error that I got on one of my XP clients. I was not there to respond to the Windows message that the core would be shut down, but the client continued running. It deleted the current work unit and downloaded another (actually the same one) and then downloaded the b4 core again. The process happened 5 times and then the client said that it was going to sleep for 1 day because of the unsuccessful work units.

This morning, when I saw what had happened, I closed the client, deleted the work directory and the queue.dat file, and then restarted the client. It downloaded the same work unit again. I tried this about 20 times and was never able to get a different work unit. Then I let it continue without responding. It did not stop at 5 attempts. After 10 unsuccessful attempts at running the same work unit, it proceeded to delete the work files for all 10 slots and then began downloading work units again. This time after 5 attempts it again went to sleep.

In some ways it seems that the Protomol core is better behaved with client v5.04 on Windows 2000 than it is with client v6.23 on Windows XP, but the end result is really the same -- good work units run and bad work units don't.

Is this a dual processor system you are referring to? I assume it is based on how you wrote your message but one can never assume anything. Could you please copy and paste an excerpt from the FAHlog.txt file of the client you are having problems with. We don't need the entire log, just an excerpt that shows the client config, the core info, the project info, and the error message. Probably go to the end to get the information from the last project attempted. If you aren't comfortable with this, you can send me the entire log file via email and I can snip out the portions we need and add it to this thread. My email address is linked in my profile.

Thank you for your report. (I think you might be the first person to report this problem.)

Can you give a more detailed description of each machine (e.g.- RAM size, OS, etc.) and post the specific information from FAHlog surrounding each type of error message. (We don't need to see the error messages more than once or any other information that's just repeated over and over.)

Some of your machines seem to be processing p10000/10001 WUs just fine. Please post the first 8 characters of the UserID (it's longer than that) of the machines that are having troubles. (We don't recommend posting the full User ID.) You can find it at the top of FAHlog.txt just after your User Name and Team No.

Fahlog contents might help too.

Tobit:
Yes, the old system has two processors. Athlon MPs are really just Athlon XPs that are capable of running multiple CPUs on the same mobo.

Bruce:

Older system: Athlon MP 2800+, 1GB RAM, Windows 2000 SP4, F@H client 5.04 x 2.

No, I'm not the only one with this problem. There are others in the Error 0x3 thread.
Yes, all of the other clients that have received work units 10000/10001 are processing them properly.

Yeah, the 0x3 error seems to happen mostly with folks running multiple instances on the same box. This is likely something that will need to be addressed by the developers. I would disable -advmethods for now until this gets straightened out.

In addition to the 0x3 error, I am frequently getting a similar error message with a different code at the start of a work unit:

CoreStatus = C000001D (-1073741795)
Client-core communications error: ERROR 0xc000001d

My last two clients that finished and got a new ProtoMol work unit downloaded a new b4 core (version 20). Maybe the problem has been fixed. At least we can hope!

I was curious to see if the newer core made any difference, so I put the -advmethods flag back into my Athlon XP folder several days ago. Just got assigned to the ProtoMol server, and this was the resulting trainwreck. Machine is an HP a230n with additional ram and graphics card, running XP Pro 32

The good news is Project: 10000 (Run 372, Clone 0, Gen 12) is running at @160 PPD.

The bad news is the following WUs were thrashed first:

Project: 10001 (Run 653, Clone 2, Gen 11) 2X

Project: 10001 (Run 655, Clone 3, Gen 2) 4X

Project: 10001 (Run 659, Clone 4, Gen 5)

Project: 10001 (Run 410, Clone 5, Gen 9)
2X

Project: 10001 (Run 666, Clone 5, Gen 4)

Project: 10001 (Run 462, Clone 2, Gen 10)

Project: 10001 (Run 493, Clone 5, Gen 6)

Project: 10001 (Run 534, Clone 3, Gen 14)

Project: 10001 (Run 849, Clone 2, Gen 11)

Project: 10001 (Run 971, Clone 5, Gen 8)

That's ten P10001 WUs thrashed in about six minutes, some of them multiple times! And it appears this would have continued as long as P10001s were assigned.

I have already set the client to quit after completing the current unit as this level of carnage is not acceptable.

Interestingly, according to the Vijay's blog, P10000 uses conventional simulation while P10001 uses NML. It appears my Athlon XP has a strong aversion to NML. :(

I should try to restart my old XP 2200+ to do some testing on this core ...
