New and at work

Post by jermjmm »

Good day all,

I just ran across this project and it looks cool. I have an ok (yes in writing) from my boss to use it at work, provided that it will not slow down the internet for everybody else. I'm sure it's probably somewhere else in the forum but I can't find it. Will this eat up the bandwith/slow down the internet?

Thanks for your help,

Jerm

Depends on the network bandwidth...

F@H will download a couple hundred KB every day or 2, and upload a MB or less with the same frequency. Since Work Units are of widely varying sizes, it's hard to put a precise number on it. A relatively fast network won't notice it.

Use the default config settings that disallows BIG and ADVANCED METHODS WUs, and you'll minimize any bandwidth problems.

I agree. Most companies impose a 2-10 MB limit rule on email attachments. Almost all fah work units are smaller than that, so uploading a work unit every few days is not much different than emailing a large spreadsheet or JPG to your coworker. ;)

thanks for your help. We have no limit on the size (I've sent a 23mb attachment before), is their any type of setting that would make it download either in the early morning or at night?

FAH has no configuration settings that recognize time-of-day. When it finishes an assignment it connects to Stanford to return the result and get a new assignment so the times are random.

If you think about the information already mentioned above, is there any reason why your office would suggest that sending/receiving (semi-small) email attachments should be restricted to early morning or at night, or are they considered insignificant?

No, the work is sequential, so WU are downloaded as the previous one is sent in complete. You should see very little affect on your internet unless you have an unusual circumstance.(but if our email allows 23mb attachment that sounds unlikely) :)

This forum is team agnostic. We don't allow team discussions.

It is entirely up to you. Your contributions are equally important to Stanford whether you join a team or not.

http://fah-web.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/mai ... =teamstats is a good place to start ... most of the teams have a link to their homepage ... just pick the one that fit your need the most (language, topic of interest, ...).

It sounds like your net won't even notice a single F@H instance. However, that would change if it got very popular and all your co-workers decided to try it. Before you "talk it up," let yours run for a couple weeks. If there are no problems, then you might go to management and ask to try a limited expansion to other machines (e.g., 2 or 3 at a time). When/if any problems arise, you can then back off to the previously unnoticed level.
