Unable To Get Work Packets

Guys, got a question for everyone.

For the past few weeks I have been having a hard time getting new work packets. It seems to only happen when the main page goes down. Are they upgrading some servers or is something else wrong with my installs?

I doesn't seem to matter what type of client it is either. I happens on both my GPU, SMP and CPU clients. As you can imagine it is very frustrating to not be able to do anything productive, for at times could be at least an entire day. Plus my Points have been taking a drastic hit cause of this.

You should post more detail about how you connect to the Internet and your FAHLog.txt showing (failed ?) connection attempts.

The way I connect to the internet is through my server. I am setup as an Administrator on my normal PC that I use.

Currently I have to clients currently down. When I right click on the client and choose Status / User Staticits, I get the page can not be displayed. So when one of my clients try to download a new Work Unit I get this in my log:

I guess something is wrong in your network configuration ... User Statistics should send you to a regular webpage, so if you can't open it on that machine, your machine can't connect to the Internet ...

Can you browse any other websites from this particular machine ? Can you connect to http://assign.stanford.edu:8080/ and http://assign2.stanford.edu/ ?

Yep, I can browse to other websites with out a problem at all. I actually was able to post these comments by using the same machine I'm having the problems with. No, I could not connect to the links you provided.

So I'm a little confused on how I can't pull any new Work Units down. It's like sometimes it will work and other times it will not. As of right now I have three clients (CPU, GPU and SMP) not able to pull anything.

Does your internet connection block all Stanford webpages? Do you happen to use PeerGuardian with the Edu blocklist or any other similar software that blocks IP ranges?

Perhaps you're using a browser other than IE and IE has been set off-line. Can you open http://assign2.stanford.edu/ using Internet Explorer?

No, I am not connecting through a proxy.
No, IE can not open that page and neither can Firefox (my primary browser)
No, it does not block all Stanford web pages and no I am not using any programs that blocks IP Addresses
To clarify I connect through a cable modem.

I'm really stumped on why I can't download any work units. Like right now my CPU and SMP are working but my GPU hasn't been able to pull any new work units for a while. The following is the log from my GPU client.

It just started to do this a few weeks ago. Everything was fine and then all this started. I'm about ready to pull my hair out trying to figure out this problem.

I understand your frustration.

When you cannot connect using either your browser or the FAH client, there's something wrong in your networking and we're really not able to diagnose that sort of problem. It could be your ISP, it could be your router, it could be your cables, it could be your security software running, it even could be an improper setup in your OS (and possibly several other things that I'm not thinking of right now).

If the problem is at Stanford, the things that need to be tested are different depending on whether you're talking about WUs for the CPU, for the GPU, for the PS3, or for SMP. In the first log you posted, you were trying to download a CPU WU and you could not connect to http://assign.stanford.edu:8080/ or http://assign2.stanford.edu In the second log you posted, you also could not upload results to http://171.67.108.25:8080 because of error 503 (server is too busy). That busy server might be at Stanford, but it also might be your router or proxy or something else somewhere on the internet. In fact, that problem appears to be at Stanford, but that doesn't explain your other problems.

I really do appreciate everyone trying to help on this very annoying problem I am having.

As of this writing I have my CPU and GPU not able to pull any new work units. My SMP is currently running one as well as my PS3.

I have tried taking my computer off the domain that I have it on, changing the TCP/IP settings to auto require IP and DNS, uninstalling and reinstalling Folding multiple at times.

The one thing that really struck me as weird when I delve deep into where the programs have installed at seemed strange. It installs the clients under C:\Program Files\Folding@home\Folding@home-x86 (this is the CPU path). When I click on Compatibility Files it take me a whole different path C:\Users\Richb.RB21\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\Folding@home\Folding@home-x86 (this is the second CPU path). The GPU install is the exact same way.

So I'm starting to think that this might have something to do with it. Not completely sure though. Each time I uninstall the program and manually go back and clean out the folders it gets reinstalled the exact same way. Now I might be wring but I don't ever remember it installing like that before.

Does anyone know if this might could cause my problem?

When I click on Compatibility Files it take me a whole different path C:\Users\Richb.RB21\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\Folding@home\Folding@home-x86 (this is the second CPU path). The GPU install is the exact same way.

So I'm starting to think that this might have something to do with it. Not completely sure though. Each time I uninstall the program and manually go back and clean out the folders it gets reinstalled the exact same way. Now I might be wring but I don't ever remember it installing like that before.

Does anyone know if this might could cause my problem?

How do you start the client? Are you using the provided shortcut in the start menu? Your work and configuration files should be stored in C:\Users\Richb.RB21\AppData\Roaming\Folding@Home-x86 while the actual executable itself should be in Program Files. But I doubt that would cause connection problems.

I figured that installation was correct but I don't believe I have seen it install that way before. I might be wrong though on that. I just seems a little odd to me.

When I start from the start menu I get different results. The is may sound a little weird but I'll my best to explain it.

There are times when I click on the executable file in programs it will run fine. Then there are times that it will do what it is currently doing, not able to pull any work units. Then of course there is the strange one where it says downloading new core. When it does this the retry count keeps going up and up. When I right click the icon in the notification area and go to Status / Log File it opens up a blank Notepad with a pop up box asking if I would like to create a new file (or something similar to that).

It's acting like it's trying to create a new log file but it can't. It's really strange. That is why I have installed it numerous times thinking something didn't install correctly.

I'm getting ready to built a new server or desktop system (cant decide on what I want to use it for yet) with the Intel I7 processor and two GTX 295 cards just for some folding purposes. If I can't figure this out, I'm not really sure if spending the money is worth while. Especially if this is going to keep on happening on the new machine.

There's a reason that the installation provides you with a shortcut.

When you use the shortcut provided, it tells the OS two important values: The "Target" (which is what you provide when you click on the executable), and the "Start in" which tells the system where to find all of the working files. When you click on the executable the value of the "start in" is not provided and the system chooses one which may produce unexpected results and may not work at all.

Do not click on the executable -- use the shortcut.
