128.143.48.226 Server reports problem with unit

Post by Mactin »

In the past 12-16 hours, I have had 4 WUs not credited with the message "Server reports problem with unit" in the logs. All come from server 128.143.48.226 from two different PCs.
These units have NOT been sneaker netted but I noticed that the User IDs changed at some point.

640954616F70E0F to 193C8BA746B28B35 (Martin_FD_T7200 (Team 96377), Machine ID 1 and 2) .
ID1: Project:3864 (Run 135, Clone 19, Gen 4)
ID2: Project: 3860 (Run 134, Clone 4, Gen 5)

355D78965E675B92 to 237626FF08A51616 (User name: Martin_FD_PX3 (Team 96377), machine ID 2 and 3).
ID2: Project: 3861 (Run 500, Clone 2, Gen 8)
ID3: Project: 3863 (Run 228, Clone 6, Gen 4)
ID1: Still running but I assume the same will happen, Project: 3861 (Run 386, Clone 2, Gen 8)

They are the first WUs processed on my new (but used) work laptop and desktop.
I have restarted them several times for Windows Update and Software installs.

Here is the log from one of them

Re: 128.143.48.226 Server reports problem with unit

Post by bruce »

there are a number of possible reasons for "server reports a problem with this unit" and I don't know them all.

Did the WU expire? What were the download an upload data-times?

Some servers check that the UserID did not change -- others do not (yet) -- so it's possible that the rejection was due to the change in User ID. Whether you sneakernetted or not has nothing to do with the issue, except that it is one possible cause for a change in User ID.

Why did the User ID change? Did you delete the entry from the registry? Did you rebuild Windows (creating a new registry)? There should be a message in FAHlog.txt or FAHlog-Prev.txt saying when the client obtained a new UserID (which would have been immediately after a restart).

I did not do anything except run windows update and install software. These where two machines that where freshly imaged.
I have now noticed that the next WUs that are currently running also have changes to User IDs after a restart (after installing software).

WUs have not expired and I have not played with the registry.

In my original post you have a complete log file from download of the WU to the end.

Should I dump WUs with changed UserIDs. At this point I feel that I am wasting electricity (and feeling a bit frustrated).

Also I have save a WU at 99% (it will finish within minutes), is there a way to reset a UserID to it's original state ?

Which version of Windows do you have? Is the Windows an Admin? It may be that the client cannot update the registry when the UserID is assigned and somehow that data is being cleared when Windows Update runs. I've never seen this sort of problem before, but it does look suspicious.

Are the multiple Service restarts due to rebooting WITHOUT installing software?

The WU was downloaded a machine with User ID = 640954.... and after reaching
[18:38:07] Completed 18000 out of 300000 steps (6%)

At that point you ran with -config and the client suddently had User ID = 193C8BA.... without actually downloading a new UserID from Stanford. (The WU was finished on that machine.)

Something happened between [May 11 18:47:56 UTC] and [May 11 19:02:08 UTC]. Is that when you imaged the machine?

I am by no means knowledgeable about what happens under the covers of both hardware and software, but my own observations have shown that some of Microsoft's Updates set another CPU notation in F@H's User Stats page. Currently I really have 5 Active Processors /cores/instances of F@H running, and have had as many as 9 show up in the last 50 Days. The only explanation for those added Active Processors is the reboots of my XP-SP2 for updates. I suspect that Microsoft doesn't care what is placed where in the Registry, and any re-order can change whatever hash-code creates the ID.

I don't recall ever getting that "Server reports problem with unit", but that may explain the 4+K jump in points I received yesterday after Stanford recalculated the points from some of their server crashes. (At least I hope so - I'd hate to have to give them back! )

Bruce,
Here is the list of events:
- I started a new job on monday.
- I have 2 "new" computers. 1) a 16 month old tablet PC with a T7200 and 2) a 2 month old desktop Phenom X3.
- Both were freshly imaged with XP tablet edition SP2 and XP Pro SP2. The image included basic software such as Office 2007 and a few others standard to my employer.
- One of the first things I did is to install fah as a service on total of the 5 cores.
- I proceeded to install updates (done) and install software, witch I admit is not 100% done yet.
- Both PCs are now SP3.
- At one point (early), the IT guy gave me local admin rights on both machines (as I think about it, this was before the service installs).
- Somewhere along the line the UserID changed, which caused the server to reject the completed WUs on tuesday.

I now have:
- 5 WUs uncredited with "Server reports problem with unit" feature from the new server code.
and more importantly
- 4 p386x WUs ( at 55%, 65%, 75% and 99%) that I have suspended with changed UserIDs.

My question: Is there a way to "rescue" them ?

Thanks

My current theory is that the server is rejecting WUs which were downloaded with one MachineID and uploaded with a different MachineID which means it will be no more than one WU per system. I really wish we could figure out WHY the UserID changed; specifically what step in the update process was involved.

I don't know if the WUs can be rescued, but here's what I would try:

Editing the registry can be very bad for your system . . . you have been warned. . . but If you're comfortable editing the registry, you can try editing the value of the UserID. (The bytes are in reverse order :!: ) Before you change anything, export the current value because you'll need it again. Change the UserID to the old value. Upload that one WU (if it hasn't expired). Re-import the value that you've been using before the new WU that was downloaded with the new value is completed.

Thanks Bruce,
I wont try to edit the registry. If it where my own PC, I might try, but not my work machine. I'll dump them.

The project will have to wait for these WUs to expire and re-issue them.
I just wish the new server code would not check UserIDs, but that's OK, it's their resources to manage.
I sort of dont care about points anymore.

I have just now uploaded to this server and have the same error message "Server reports problem with unit" and my user id has not changed.
I viewed my FAHlog-Prev.txt and this log also verifies the same user id.
I may have updated windows xp,but not to sp3 yet.
I realize the points for this WU will not be added to my team or my individual score, but it sure seems something is wrong somewhere? :e?:
Please advise?
Thank You.

This is a single user computer running XP Pro sp2 [5.1.2600] w/full admin. rights
I am not sure if all reboots were or were not about updating/installing software. [including any windows updates]
As a precaution from now on I will not plan on any windows updates being installed until after any WU's are finished and the FAH program turned off during any changes to my windows environment.
Thank you so much Bruce for your help.

noprob wrote:I have just now uploaded to this server and have the same error message "Server reports problem with unit" and my user id has not changed.
I viewed my FAHlog-Prev.txt and this log also verifies the same user id.
I may have updated windows xp,but not to sp3 yet.
I realize the points for this WU will not be added to my team or my individual score, but it sure seems something is wrong somewhere? :e?:
Please advise?
Thank You.

Please provide us with the details of the WU in question. Any information you can provide is potentially helpful, especially the information from FAHlog showing the download/starting and ending/uploading of that WU.
