F@H newbie :-)

Post by Krisken »

One of the forums where i'm active, has created a f@h group (userbase.be).
Now that i have a brandnew PC, i would like to join that group, but i don't know exactly what kind of software that i have to install...

Configuration of my PC:
- Core i7 920
- 12GB ram
- 3x1TB harddisk
- 2xGeForce 9600 in SLI
- Windows Vista 64bit

I did already install the f@h for the GPU, and that do run great.
But what software do i have to install to use as many cores as possible?

Welcome to the folding forum, Krisken.

You didn't specify which OS you're running, but it's probably WIndows. With a nice new computer like that, I'm going to assume you're pretty knowledgable with respect to software installation and configuration, though that may not be the case. For newbies, we often recommend that they start slow . . . get acquainted with how FAH runs on their machine and only then to try to add more clients to get better utilization. It's your choice when that should happen, of course.

First, every client must have a unique place for its working files. Each one must also be configured with a different value for Machine ID which is in the advanced configuration.

If you're willing to disable SLI, you can run two GPU clents.

To make use of your four cores, there are two options. The SMP client does have some bugs. It does not like to be stopped and restarted and it can be a bit of a challenge to get set up properly, but it will make good use of your hardware.

The alternative is to install multiple standard uniprocessor clients.

The Pande Group recommends one FahCore per real CPU core, so one SMP client or four CPU clients will actually use the i7 very effectively even though with HT enabled, Windows will see 8 virtual processors so it will lie to you and tell you that you're only using 50% of your hardware. Some people elect to run more clients/FahCores, but when they do, each of the clients slows down and you really gain very little.

Well i did specify the OS : Windows Vista 64bit (see bottom of the configuration)
I know that i only have 4 cores, but with the HT on, windows want me to believe that I have 4 cores :)

Disabeling the SLI would be quite difficult, because i use it all the time (games etc) when my computer isn't running eg f@h

What would be the best solution to use my 4 cores :
- SMP client
- 4x uniprocessor client

Considering you are a FAH newbie, you're better off using 4x uniprocessor clients. They're easy to set up and they don't require that you monitor them much for problems. If you're shooting for a set-and-forget configuration, use this configuration.

The SMP client is more difficult to set up, but pretty reliable once you get it going. One drawback is that you have to monitor them for any problems they encounter.

This brings up another question. How long do you plan to keep your computer on? The SMP client is a high-performance client that has short deadlines while the uniprocessor client gets work units with reasonably long deadlines.

The NVIDIA GPU client unfortunately does not support SLI at the moment, and I believe if you have SLI enabled, it only uses one of your GPUs.
