F@H Points/Progress question

I have noticed that it takes ages for F@H To get to 1500. (At least on my PC...)

My question is, Say I was at 300/1500, If i quitted, Would I get THAT amount of points? Or a bit less? Or does it have to complete a whole 1500 to get a couple of points?

If you quit, how would the results be of any use? And just as important, how would they get uploaded?

Also, the steps it takes for a wu to complete has no direct reference to the points you get for a project. I would advice using fahmon to monitor clients, it will give you an estimated completion time, and it will calculate the points you will get per day based on the time it will take to complete a project. For fahmon to do this, it uses a list of diffrent projects and the points they are worth, this list is also linked at the top of the forum ( the link is called - Project Summary <- this is clickable to and will take you there ).

Don't worry to much about it being slow, speed isn't of the highest importance, your contribution will always be appriciated

Though if you really think it's going slower then it should, post your hardware config and client config and a snippet of the log file showing the time it takes to complete a percentage/step.

project 4444 is worth 254 points, you're doing one step in +- 17 minutes = 170 minutes for the project. One day = 24*60 = 1440 / 170 minutes = ~8.47 projects per day so 254 * 8.47 ~ 2151 PPD approximatly.

That's pretty good for a unicore client

Had me a litlle surprised ( idk why these are mentioned there, but I haven't run the systray client in awhile so it's probably normal ).

Edit: honest mistake.. I forgot a zero when I did the calculations, should be 1700 minutes per project not 170 so your ppd should be around 215ppd not 2151ppd

Edit: I asked for the cpu type since I can't see your hardware configuration in your profile. Eg, pentium4/core 2 duo/Amd sempron/athlon and then which model. Should help making sure you're running optimal. If you got a dual core/quad core you're only using one core with the uniprocessor client so you could either add another one ( or 3 for a quad ), or run the SMP client which will do more work and net your more points for that.

Points are awarded when the work unit is completed and returned to Stanford.
Work units come in different sizes, and may take a few hours or a few days to complete, and the total points are comensurate with that size/length.

Maybe a virus/malware/spyware remover, if you think that there might be unsavory things taking up processor time. Other than that, I think the only way to speed up your processor is to overclock it, and not only is that mainly done through hardware manipulation, but it's not overly endorsed by the Pande Group because it has the potential to cause issues with the simulations.

Overclocking helps, but it still won't get you more than 300ppd on that WU.The calculations that Folding does are very computationally intensive because they simulate protein folding on a scale never seen before. Even on the fastest CPUs the process just takes a long time It's designed to be left running in the background, so it shouldn't really matter how long it takes to get through one WU.

If you have a modern CPU with more than one core, you can run more than one copy of the client at the same time to double or quadruple the amount of work you do.

Don't be discouraged by your 215 PPD for project 4444. 215 PPD isn't actually too bad for projects 4433-4499. On my 2.4 GHz AMD Phenom, these projects usually produce less PPD (usually 180-200 PPD) than ones like 5114 (around 380-420). Wait patiently for better times
