Running more than one?

Post by sL8 »

I looked around for this question and didn't see one.
Can I run like 2+ of these on the same computer, same account?
Cause I leave this laptop on all night with usually nothing running, so, if I can run more than one of these without them conflicting with each other, that'd be great.
Did I post this in the right place?

Hello sL8, welcome to the forum.

Yes, you can install more than one CPU client for Windows. Start with one client in a new folder such as FAH1... http://folding.stanford.edu/English/WinUNIGuide#ntoc2

Then repeat the process in another folder, such as FAH2.

Make sure the Machine ID in the 2nd client is set to 2. (advanced options)

It would be nice if the "official" Windows setup guide on the project web site addressed this issue directly for this client like it does with the GPU client.

Only run 2+ instances of the regular CPU client if you have more than one physical processor. If you only have a single-core, the two instances will fight with each other for proessor time, and the work on both will slow down a lot. Note that Hyperthreading on older Intel CPUs doesn't count as a physical processor, and trying to run 2 clients on an old P4 w/HT will not provide more points per day (PPD).

If you do have a multi-core CPU, you might think about running the SMP client, as it produces a lot more PPD, and will use up as many cores as you have (well, Core i7s can apparently run 2 instances of SMP without much conflict, but they don't make Core i7s for laptops yet). Be warned, however, that the Windows SMP client is still in beta and is more difficult to setup/manage than the normal CPU client. Mac and Linux SMP clients are fairly stable, from what I gather, or at least the non-beta versions are.

If you have a new enough graphics card (HD 2000 series or higher ATI card, or 8000 series or higher Nvidia card), you should think about running the GPU2 client. ATI cards use one CPU core fairly intensely, while Nvidia cards barely use the CPU at all. I'm running the GPU2 client on an ATI card fed by an old P4 which is running one instance of the unipocessor client, and while the CPU client runs at about half the speed it did before, it still makes the deadlines by a long shot. ATI + SMP might be a bad combination, though, since the SMP deadlines are a lot shorter than uniproc, so unless you have more than 2 cores on your processor, the ATI client should probably be paired with only one normal CPU client. But I've run SMP on a dual-core and the Nvidia GPU2 at the same time, and the SMP client's only slowed down by a few seconds per percentage point completed.
