local SMP WU cache/pool/server?
I've ran into an issue before when I was testing the 5.91/5.92 Linux SMP client where it ran out of work LONG before the deadline for the beta was due.
Is there a way to store a bunch of SMP WUs locally?

Re: local SMP WU cache/pool/server?
Thanks.
(P.S. the search function/feature on this forum doesn't work all that well. (i.e. I can't search for the term "smp" because it's too short, although highly relevant).)

Highly relevant, but also highly used. Even if the search were permitted, you would get a million responses to the search, and it wouldn't be helpful.
There are two search options, the native forum search, and the Google forum search (top search line on the search page). And using the google search line for SMP does work, but demonstrates my previous point.

There's got to be a better way of doing a search for something like that though.
Unless pretty much anything and all of the SMP related topics are consolidated into one section otherwise you're going to have bits and pieces of it floating around in different areas.

Re: local SMP WU cache/pool/server?
Searching is about finding the right search words. "SMP" is too generic. "smp stored work units" seems to be more specific, but the client doesn't really store work units. Sometimes a more technical word is appropriate. The client might instead be "caching" or "queuing" work units instead of "storing" them.
Of course, becoming familar with the client FAQs can clue you in to some of these terms, and even answer some of your questions. RTF FAQs.

I think that it ignores the term "smp" because it's too short.7im wrote:Searching is about finding the right search words. "SMP" is too generic. And if you can point me to the section of the FAQ that addresses the WU cache/pool, then I would certainly gladly read it. Otherwise, as far as I remember, I have read the FAQ and it says NOTHING about it. Perhaps it is YOU who should RTF FAQs.

Yes, you are correct. The default forum search does ignore "SMP" because it is too small. However, if you use the Google Forum search line just above it, as I already mentioned in my post above, "SMP" is a valid search, but you get a million results. As I said, too generic for a search word.
I have Read The F@H FAQs. Yes, I can point you to where caching is mentioned in the FAQ. On the Main FAQ page... http://folding.stanford.edu/English/FAQ-main#ntoc27
We have developed certain work units that do not lead to new work and hence do not need deadlines. These so-called "timeless" WUs are on a server and you can request one with the gah selection in the client. These WUs are best for slower machines or machines which are not connected to the Internet. The client is capable of caching these WUs as well. For clients version 5.00 and newer, deadlineless WUs are listed explicitly.
Notes:
* Recently, deadlineless WU's have been unavailable due to the science we have been studying (which is not compatible with them), but this WU type may return.
That is one place where you might pick up the term caching instead of storing. And that leads you to be able to search the forum more effectively. As you can see from the above Note, caching is not currently available as a client feature. But that and all things caching have been discussed at length in this forum at some point in time.

Yea...I've tried the google search. It works...to a certain extent. You kind of have to filter the results a bit more manually, but usually I'd guess within like the first 100 results, if you've ever worked in a library or been to one a lot, you'd have a pretty good idea of what to type in for keyword searching.7im wrote:Perhaps not.alpha754293 wrote:I think that it ignores the term "smp" because it's too short.

(The idea/intent behind it is to check and see if something of a similar nature has been posted previously. However, an inefficient, ineffective search engine means that you can't really accomplish that goal/purpose easily. Which then leads to..."what's the use in trying?" But...at least I tried.)
ntoc27 doesn't actually specifically address the issue of caching or storing WUs, especially given that the question being asked is "What does the 'gah' selection do now?"
Therefore; I will ask once again, where in the FAQ that you have specifically told me to read (albeit I am going to presume that you're presuming that I haven't...) states that any type of information retrival system, independent of external network or communications, except periodically as specified by the user, is possible/not possible?
I don't remember seeing a section in the FAQ to the effect of "Can I keep my own WU cache?"
Perhaps you would be so kind as to enlighten me.
(To cache to local storage means to store; ergo, they should be synonymous or associated/related terms.)

Please see
http://folding.stanford.edu/English/FAQ-main#ntoc34
we don't use the word "cache", but ask people "not to download more than one WU at the same time", which is of course the same thing.
I could make this more explicit if people would prefer that (eg something like "Therefore, we ask that donors do not run WU caching software." at the end of that subsection).

*shrug* It is entirely up to you. The thread has already answered my initial question.VijayPande wrote:Please see
